Ok well i have 2 yorkshire terriers a lot smaller then normal. Bitch 1 since feb and male 1 only a few days. The bitch was in heat about 4 weeks ago dont know the exact date cause we wernt really wanting them to breed so young but the male got to the bitch. Shes now very moody and very swollen at the tummy. Picked her up last night and she yelped even though i picked her up carefully. Shes very picky for food but seems to be eating fairl normal when she does actually eat. Could she be pregnant or could it just be a phantom preg? Anyway of telling besides getting a scan? Please help

Hi Aimee
If you have it right that your bitch was in season 4 weeks ago, and you have only had the male a few days then she should not be in whelp.  You do not say how old these dogs are?  Yorkies is not my breed, but I am sure there are health tests to be thought about!!!!!!!!!!! Did you get the male particularly to breed with the male??
I know I have gone off course a bit but hope my first bit answered your question.

But I was just concerned that you may be breeding for the sake of.

No the bitch is one year old since feb and the male 1 year only a few days is what i meant. We have them since they were only a few weeks old.

Also i did say we didnt want them breeding so young, we wanted them to be at least 2 years old and have all tests necessary!

"Did you get the male particularly to breed with the male??" I presume you mean to breed with the female? And no we got them as companions for each other and might have made a decision about breeding further down the line.

Breeding for the sake of it? I also said the male got to the female it wasnt on purpose.

If your bitch is a lot smaller than normal I would imagine it very risky for her to continue with a pregnancy even to a small male, puppies can only be so small and even the smallest will probably be too large for this bitch to safely whelp a section carries a risk at the best of times and in very small animals the blood loss can be devastating.  All in all I think it would be best for her if you took her to the vet and had her spayed at this point.  This may seem disappointing in terms of future breeding plans but if she is very small she would never have been suitable.

Please book her in for a spay in 8 weeks time to avoid a chance of her getting preganant next season :D

It will also avoid the danger of them damaging each other during unsupervised matings, it's not always as straightforward as you might think :)

Yes we will dont want anything happening to her. Rather have her then a few puppies..

Hi Aimee

We have a yorkie bitch, she is very small and can never be bred from purley because of her size and the danger that would impose. If there is any chance that your one is pregnant then I think the safest thing for her would be a trip to the vet to get it sorted. What a tragedy it would be for her if she were to try and continue with a pregnancy. If she is never to be bred from then maybe having her spayed at some point would be the best option. I did this with ours, I never had any intention of breeding anyway, never bred anything in my life except when I had my own kids:D
The breeder told me she was way to small and that was her reason for selling her, so I bought her knowing this. Good Luck
