Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Dwarfism in Labs
- By Guest [gb] Date 05.07.05 20:01 UTC
I have read a few times that some labs suffer with dwarfism can anyone give me any info about this, what causes it or give me any sites with any info. I'm concerned as my 23 month lab bitch from working lines is very small, around 16inches to the shoulder, not that we intend breeding her as she is a much loved pet, just concerned about any possible future health problems, any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

Well look at her profile, dwarfs have a normal head and body, but little stumpy legs, if she is in proportion but just small then she is fine, working bred Labs are usually a lot smaller than the heavier show type.

That is achondroplastic dwarfism (which is what all the short legged breeds are), but other forms of dwrfism are different and cause more health problems and often a short life as that found in GSD's and Malamutes.

I've also seen a goldie dwarf too so is not confined to one breed either. I suppose mutations can occur in any breed at any time!!

Dwarfism in labradors - occurs in some bloodlines of labradors -  isn't one of the breeders' favourite topics. The mode of inheritance is not fully understood.
As far as I know the dwarfism itself is not any health risk. I'd be very interested to know your dog's pedigree.
Wish you well.
