I will be breeding my bitch with the same male in a few months time. I was wondering if anyone out there had experienced different colour puppies from the same sire. My male whippet is a blue fawn (who had a black mother and fawn father) my female whippet is blue fawn and white (her brother was blue and white). I was hoping for blues/whites in some of their litter but they had one blue fawn and white and 4 blue fawns. Can anyone enlighten me if they have experienced different colours breeding the same dogs.
In my breed I've used the same dog with my girl and ended up with totally different colours :d Don't know about your breed though!
the colouring of the grandparents is just as important as that of the sire and dam as well as dogs even further back inthe pedigree. For example if both grand mum were fawn and white on both sides and grandsire was blue and white on one side and fawn and white on the other then the fawn gene will still be carried by a puppy who is blue and white. Colour genetics are very complicated and you have to first realise which colour is dominant in your breed. For Stafford's it is the black gene so a red bitch mated to a black dog will generally have brindle or black pups but again it depends on the background behind both sides of the pedigree so it does happen that a red wil be born in a litter of bridnles. Our first bitch was the result of a mating between a red dog and red bitch but she is mainly white which come through from her great granddad's on boths side of her pedigree but obviously she carries the red gene and white gene plus there is a small amount of black brindle breeding behind her about four generations back so it would have been a small possibilty that I would seen a brindle pied in any litters she would have had. Carlo Battaglia (think thats how its spelt) has book that may help you get more of a grasp of things.
