I have an adult dog and 9.5 wk old puppy.
The puppy has had her last jab, but will not be able to go outside for a walk until the weekend, when our vet said it will be ok for her.
My question is this (let me know your thoughts)
When I am walking our adult dog, would it be ok for me to slip our puppy into a rucksack type thing and have her at the front of me (almost like a baby)
I tought that it would be nice for her to join us on our walks, as it seems such a shame to have to leave her out of things.
I know that its only a few days till she can come out with us on the lead, but do you think its a good idea to get her socialized, as there are cows and sheep in the fields over the road from us, which I thought I could gradually introduce her to.

I dont see a problem with that. In fact I take my pups out walking after their first jab - just not too far though :)

Is 91/2 weeks a bit young for 2nd jabs? Don't know!

Hi we normally do jabs at 10 and 12 weeks! So to me that is to young for a second injection! Please be careful walking your puppy as over exercising can damage the bones i have seen this happen to other people's dogs! I don't see a problem with the rucksack, but i personally wouldn't do it as your kind of mollycoddling it from noises. What you could do is take your adult dog for a nice walk then the puppy just around the corner and back.

We have an adult dog and a 14 week old puppy. My OH generally takes the older dog for a walk and then I arrange to meet them on their way back with the puppy. This way the dogs get to spend some of the walks together. Also, we will take them to a forest park or country park. Puppy and I will only do a short walk while OH and dog go further. Puppy and I return to the carpark and sit on a bench so she observe what is going on a round her and meet other people and dogs at the same time which is helping with the socialisation process without over-exercising.
Our vets does 1st injection at 8 weeks and 2nd injection at 12 weeks :-)

My vets have just recently changed, in June in fact, and it is now 8 weeks and 10 weeks.

We had this litter done at 8ish then told to wait until they are 11 before the second, i no vets vary.

This is what I do with my pups before they can go out. I did this from 6 weeks with a puppy that was going to Australuia at 14 weeks and would then ahve to do a months quarantine. The socialisation paid dividends as when she came out of quarantine at 19 weeks she was bomb proof. Had I not done this they would have ahd quite a job on having missed out on a crucial socialisation window.

Most definite! You should be 'wearing' your puppy. Take her everywhere you go, so that she can experience all the noise, smells and sights of life. Make your visits only 10-15 minutes long and do not overwhelm her too much. Make sure the experiences are positive for her, so take some titbits with you and make it a happy experience. You will need to be carrying her though, as she can catch all sorts from the ground and other dogs' faeces.
With regards to walking, again not too much as her bones/joints are soft and not fully developed. You should really be planning short socialisation trips in areas where there is plenty going on. Also get her to meet livestock and other animals in a controlled way.
The socialisation will pay off dividends in future!
All the best,
Patty
