Hello, i am new to this site and just wondered if anyone could give me any advice.
I have a 3 year old bitch who was mated at the end of March this year for the first time and missed.  After about 3 weeks she went right off her food and towards the end was really clingy she lost quite a bit of stringy discharge but the vet confirmed a phantom after scanning her. Now 4 weeks on she is still going through it, she has attached herself to my sons teddy bear and will not let it out of her sight and today she has milk.  I have spoken to the vet who says just to take the teddy away and give her plenty of exercise. This just seems a terribly long time for a phantom to go on for. Any advice appreciated, i feel so sorry for her!

hi daisy
i have a girl that has phantoms every season she isnt mated .. she is now 4 and she has been known to have these phantoms last the whole 9 weeks of what would be a normal pregnancy and even have the swollen teats and milk .. the vet is right about taking the teddy from her and plenty of exercise other than that in my experiance there isnt an awful lot you can do besides letting it run its course and not encourage or allow her to mother anything like soft toys or teddies .. she will be back to her normal self in no time .. unless of course your vet is wrong and she actually is having pups .. doubtful if she had a negative scan i know but these things have happened .. i have read on here and a few other sites of cases where a vet has scanned and seen no pups or diagnosed a phantom pregnancy but the bitch has gone onto whelp a litter as she was carrying them really high in her ribs where the scan couldnt see . so it is a possibilty all be it a slim one ...:D the most likely is that it is just a plain phantom pregnancy and she will return to her normal self in a few weeks time :D
