Does anybody give their dogs raw eggs once or twice a week to keep their dogs coat in good condition. Grandparents used to do it with their dog and apparently it was really good. when my oldest dog was a puppy we gave him a raw egg mixed with his meal occasionally but does anyone else do it and do they think that it's worth it?!
I'm giving mine an egg each tonight and if people think it's worth it then im going to do it weekly.
Any opinions would be brilliant.

Mine get a raw egg most days, including the shell.
I've been told not to give my breed eggs too often because they're coat may become too greasy. But, would you say that giving them an egg each once a week is a good idea?
By the way they're Siberian huskies.

Yes, give an egg once a week , complete with shells :)
My friend who is a vet has actually told me not to give mine raw eggs to often as apparantly it stops the absorbtion of vitamin B which is the vitamin which helps with the nervous system. I am inclined to agree as since my girl had her puppies I have given her a raw egg everyday and she has been a total cow when we take her to shows ;) She advised me to drop the eggs into a bowl of boiling water so the white sets as it is the whites which are the cause of the problem.

Is is a common belief that the consumption of raw eggs may result in a biotin deficiency (considered a B vitamin). It is the ingredient avidin in the egg white or albumen that binds itself to the biotin rendering it unavailable to the body.
There is enough biotin in an egg yolk to compensate for this. It is only the consumption of a) large amounts of raw egg whites only (as used to be prescribed for invalids in the past) combined with b) a poor diet which would pose such a threat.
Biotin deficiency itself can result in greasy skin and seborrhoeic dermatitis etc

I have no idea why giving an egg a day would result in a greasy coat, it has not in my two breeds but I do know that huskies et al have specialist dietary requirements re zinc etc.
How come you feed raw egg WITH the shell? You learn something new everyday on this site!!
Tohme,
Do you give your pups eggs as well? And do the eggs have to be in date, or doesn't that matter either?
Obviously it doesn't else you wouldn't give it to the dogs in the shell, but I would have thought the shell would cause all sorts of problems, but I suppose if they can eat and digest bones, shells must be pretty easy!!!

Egg shells are a source of Calcium :)
I give my dog raw egg 3 times a week, not shells though,is it ok to do that.

So, in conclusion, an egg once a week is fine. That's good, not that they ate their dinner anyway lol!

I give mine them whole outside. Cava tries to hide his in his mouth and sneak inside to eat it!! No way!! :D Zymi splats his on the concrete and eats it right away. I like to make Zymi think a bit so he had a frozen egg this morning, you should have seen his face when he dropped it and nothing happened :D :D

I fed mine with their dinner, mushed it in with dry food. they seemed to lick the eggs and spit out the food lol

I give mine a whole egg each at least once a week, the westie just crunches down on it and its gone, but the Lab picks it up and brings it back to me he will keep doing this until I crack it for him, strange behavior from a dog that gets through a whole rabbit in about two mins.
lol, sounds great fun. Does anyone know if eggs have an immediate effect on dogs. Because, today when I went to do a dog display, quite a few people from the team commented on how he'd been groomed and how soft his fur was! The only thing is, I last groomed him on Tuesday and they'ev seen him twice since then.
Could it be to do with the egg I fed him last night?

Bearing in mind that hair/coat/fur is dead, any change in its condition would be as a result of at least six weeks change........

ok tried the raw eggs including shells today :-D
all of mine have had a raw egg at some point occasionaly
but not Tia whos 4 1/2 months, all 4 ate the egg
Tia was the only 1 who wolfed down the shell Kisska ate some
but the boys Storm & Zar turned their noses up at the shell :-D
just 1 problem though ............................ OMG!!!!
Storm & Tia seem to have developed cronic fart syndrome!!! :-O
