Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Chipping or Tattoo

I have been reading back through one of your previous forums on the pros and cons of both Tattooing and Chipping and are hopeing someone may be able to answer a couple of questions for me, i have been a owner of Lakeland Terriers for many years now and most of my dogs have been working dogs and as anyone knows who works dogs from time to time some dogs when on a scent take off, i have had this happen to myself a few times over the years and "touch wood" i have never yet lost a dog. But i am hearing more and more of Dogs not being returned when straying and dogs being stolen, having recently been at a dog show a couple of owners where having a discusion about the best ways of I.D ing your dog, Chipping was mentioned only to have a coment raised by one owner that he has heard that dog theifes are now able to erase information on a chip by somehow subjecting the chip to a electrical magnetic current, we all had a laugh about this and went our merry ways but this has been bugging me ever since and would like to know if anyone could tell me if there is any truth in this ?.
I have had all my dogs chipped both past and present as i assumed this was a fail safe way of identifying your dog, now i am also considering having them Tattooed and was hopeing someone would be able to offer some advise on the ins and outs of haveing your dog tattooed,
I look forward to any replies to the above.

     Yours

Im having the same thought at the moment, msot of mine are chipped but my opinion is how hard can it be for a theif to get hold of a scanner ring up and change the details to their ownership. I am concidering getting mine tattooes even though its a slightly more expensive option i think it might be better.
