hi, how long roughly does a season last? our pup is having her first one. also is it over when the blood stops?

No!!  Usually when the blood stops is when they are most fertile!!!  You should keep your bitch away from any male dog and watch ehr even in your own garden for at least 3 weeks, and if she is still open looking and very swollen for more like 4 weeks.

Bitches can vary wildly when they ovulate and can conveive, some it could be in the first few days and others after the average 21 days :D

Often the first season is not quite qas drawn out as future ones, but take no chances.

Do not let her off the lead at this time, as many bitches are as anxious to be mated as males are to mate with them.
