Was wondering if anyone here has ever been camping. Next year when my friend from Chicago comes back over (should be about May/june) we thought we'd go camping. Not for long just a few days on our own. Only thing is I know nothing about camping. All i know is I need a tent and sleeping bags, heh. The idea was maybe to go to the New Forest but I don't know if that really is the best place to go. Where ever we are going has to be reachable by public transport (even if that means a bus every 6 hours so be it) as neither of us drive. I don;t want to go to a site which is nothing more than a run down field stuffed full of other campers. I want to go some where back to nature, you need to get away from people when you live in London.  If anyone has any ideas, please share.

Thanks,
Rebecca

Camping is great fun, you'll enjoy it - but could be expensive to kit yourselves out if it's going to be a one off trip. Also I wouldn't fancy the public transport bit, mainly because you'll hvae so much stuff to carry - but if you can manage with the real basics (& I mean basic) then you might be ok.
Have you got anyone who could drop you off somewhere & pick you up a few days later? This would give you chance to take more stuff - you could offer fuel money to the person for the transport.

Is it possible to hire a tent etc in situ as they do in France ??? I'd have thought that you couldn't carry all your gear easily on public transport unless you really like minimalism :D :D

Hi Rebecca, Been camping loads of times. Lovely place in the New forest called Homesley, Has a nice take away place on site for breakfast, dinner and tea. Also well stocked shop. Just a bus ride to christchurch and boscombe beach. Just grab your tent sleeping bags and wash things and go.
Have fun and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Don't get too enamoured by getting completely back to nature! The idea of remoteness is ok, but you will need toilets and facilities to shower, get drinking water etc. There are plenty of books that give info on campsites, star ratings etc. If this is your first time camping, stick to a well rated site :D

I know I am miles behind everyone as we have just come back from 3 Counties, If you go to your local libary yjere are holiday reference book with camping. trust and coutryside commistion hand.

Please do not try wild camping off site as it can be very dangerous, especially with to young girls ( I am 50, so anything less is young girls)

Also take a trip to WH Smoth bookshop on the travel section and have a sly look at there selection.

There is a site called campsite UK there are lot of sites with write up from people that have visited, they have a section for camping goods and reviews for what you till need to take they also do a check list of essential needs.

Hope this helps

Lynn
