hi
we have a chocolate bitch whose sire and dam are both chocolate and we we have found a stud dog to complement her with excellent health scores etc but he is black whose sire was blackand dam that was yellow.
please can anyone tell me the likelyhood of a chocolate puppy. or can anyone tell me their opinion of the litter colour/s
many thanks

Most likely colour is black as this is dominant.  But, if the sire carries chocolate, each puppy born will be 50:50 chance of black:choc.  If there is choc breeding further back in his pedigree there is a chance that he carries.

The stud is a carrier of yellow having a yellow parent so if your bitch also carries there will be a 25% chance of yellow for each puppy born which will overide the black/choc gene.

you should be breeding to a black I beleive as since your bitch is from a choc/choc mating breeding to a choc stud may cause dilution of colour. Not my breed but as far as I understand that is the way it works....hopefully someone with labs will come along and confirm this...is this right Julie??

Nope :-)  The brown (Chocolate) "genes" don't accumulate and blacks are just as likely to carry the genes that do dilute the colour.  You just don't see their effect in a black.

Irish Water Spaniels and English Springers breed brown x brown (same gene) continuously without losing pigment.

I always thought that I'd read on here that continued choc to choc breeding diluted colour...thanks for putting me right
