Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Barking problem
- By climber [gb] Date 03.04.02 17:53 UTC
Our male castrated BT persistently barks through the fence at the dog's next door
He knows he is not allowed to as when his name is shouted he stops for about 2 mins
then starts again till told of again
We have tried throwing water over him this stops him for about 10 mins
any other suggestions other than moving next door to neighbours without dogs :(

Have you tried bringing him indoors?
- By climber [gb] Date 03.04.02 18:15 UTC
Yes:d
But now the weather is better we tend to have the back door open most of the day
We do try to take it in turns with the neighbours bringing ours in our theirs;)
but you now when the others have been let out:eek:
also the bull mastiff next door has nearly eaten HIS way through the fence to get at each other

Sounds like you need to occupy him when he's outside or as already said - bring him in.

He has company when he is outside the bitch BT she doesn't bark at the fence she just barks at him to get his attention back to her
when the dogs next door aren't out the amuse themselves in silence

I had a BSD that developed this habit, but it was her love of the next door neighbour that had her litterally svreaming with excitment as soon aas the back door clicked prior to opening.

What I did was fence across my Garden so that only the first 20 or so feet length of the garden by its width is available to the dogs. This stopped her being able to run up and down such a long length of fence, and means I could reach her physically when she started. When she passed on I already had this in place for my breed can be noisy if not actively discouraged. There is also the added benefit of containing toileting area, and part of the garden is guaranteed poop free!!

What you consistently have to do is bring the dog in every time it barks, then give it command of quiet, and let out again, as soon as it barks, repeat. The dog will learn that it's fun is curtailed if it keeps barking. Honest it does work!

I too leave the back door open, and my lot do rush out if someone is at my front door, but I only have to call 'IN' amd they come back in and shut up, so the barking is brief, and I shut the back door if I am expecting visitors, or as now the kids from next door are traipsing in an out my house :(

Thanks for the idea the problem didn't start till end of the summer last year & hasn't been much of problem through winter as dogs next door weren't out often.
Just started getting worse last few weeks, we do order him in when they start now so it sounds promising if we persist with that he may get the message.:)

Guess what - we have the same problem with Max and Ella our next door neighbours dog  But the difference is if she is told to shut up she DOES lol.

Hi! Banger would never thought you would have this problem as well;)
Mine does come inn when shouted ( but not always conveniant if on phone or net .ect..)
neighbours are normally not around to stop theirs so it's sort of our problem to sort out:(

My border collie does this too. The biggest problem is my neighbour doesnt have a dog, she barks at the neighbour. Have had to block the dog flap.

Now instructed kids to tell dog to come in when barking at the fence & to make shaw he stays in for short while before being let out again.
hopefully if all members of the family do the same responce he will get the message pretty quickly

It took me about 3 or 4 weeks with the BSD, with the Elkhounds I did this from the very start (no bad habit to break).
