I'm not sure I understand it......why would you want to have a tatoo done? Usually that was done by a breeder, but I'm not sure they even do it anymore. At least not in Europe.

I have all my pups ear tattoed by one of the National Dog Tattoo Registers network of tattooists.  If you ahve a litter then they will come to you.  If it is an individual yu would normally go to them or go to where they may be doing a group of dogs.

You can get your puppy tatooed with the national tattoo register and your dog will be registered with them for th rest of his life, but beware if your puppy gets stolen and a theif doesn't want him to be identified, there has been cases of a dogs ears being cut off. But this usually only happens with greyhounds. Why not get him micro-chipped it's alot less hassle and it can never be removed.

Oh I see..... I didn't understand only because we get our dogs micro-chipped, not tatooed. Besides it's much less painfull and it needs to be done anyway if you ever want to travel abroad.

Try this link, it will give you a better insight on tatoo-ing.  With the knowledge that 'chips' have the odd tendency to migrate and become undetectable I would think that a tatoo is the ideal 'identity tag'

I am getting quite cheesed off with people telling posters that their dogs will get their ears cut off if they are tattooed when in fact other than racing greyhounds that have been dumped after their racing careers are over & that have been physically abused in other ways as well (they are not tattooed by the NDTR)no NDTR dog has ever had it's ear cut off, however <Why not get him micro-chipped it's alot less hassle and it can never be removed.>there are cases of dogs having had their chips cut out or having been cut in an attempt to do so & have you forgotten the moving chips, failing chips etc ? & I know of several people who have had to have their dog & cat chips removed because of where they moved to so they are far from unremovable

When Dave & Jan Hall had several GSD puppies stolen to order they were returned within hours INTACT because they were tattooed & unsellable, microchipped dogs can be sold on with evidence that the dog is chipped & there are ways of nullifying chips that I will not post on here

If you want to have you puppy tattooed contact Gill the NDTR registrar on 01255 552455 & she will advise you on your nearest tattooist to sort out getting your puppy tattooed

A mircochip an easilly be removed, knife and afew stiches and the dog's never reconised again and knowbody will know the different, they do with an ear being cut off!!!!

IMO Tattoos are better then microchips as they cannot move, however a dog with hairy ears makes a tatoo unreadable! ;)

A pair of scissors will soon reveal any hair hidden tattoo & it doesn't need to be all visible

Thats a good point MM, one thats so simple I couldn't think of it!!!!

But what happend with a dark skin ear?  or is their another colour (All I've seen is a darkish green) Or do dogs not have black ears?

I think I had better go off and see afew dogs ear colours! ;)

One of  my collies had black skin in his ears & the black ink showed up with no problem

When Rory Frost set up the NDTR he asked a human tattooist what colour would show up best on dark pigment & was told black this is why all NDTR tattoo ink is not black. They also use a unique small forceps & die stamps for numbers & letters & this also makes for far better tattooes than anyone else does

Oooh, what puppy are you getting Carol? Is the 'Mal Plan' still on??! :D

There is a vet in Middlesbrough who does ear tattoos, you can search on the National Dog Tattoo Register website for his contact details :)

Emily  &  The Hungarians :D

Tattoos also don't require expensive 'readers' to verify them ;)  just about everyone has a pair of 'readers' in their head and the dog is visibly identified immediately :)

my rottie got a microchip and it is no where to be found on him so we thought an ear tatoo on our next pup would be a lot better.
