try putting the name of the breed you want in your browser and locate the breed club for that type.  They will often have a list of breeders who may have puppies.

the kennel club is a good place to start! but ill probably get my head bitten of for this(cowers in the corner lol :d) but, epupz is also a place to find puppies advertized. i got my mini dacs from there 4mths ago and have had no problems but i have been told that breeders dont get vetted there so if you do get 1 from there be careful. make sure you see mum with litter ,were there living ect and that they have proof that all relivent health checks have been don on sire and dam! and stay clear of dLRC registerd pups as the paper there written on isnt worth a bean! :) good luck in getting your puppie. :)

Interesting you chose epupz... can I ask why?

I'm not about to criticise you in any way shape or form, I am really interested in why you chose to go to epupz rather than through the KC or breed clubs. If you don't want to reply publically then pm me.

I looked on there a few months ago and discovered a breeder claiming something about their dogs which was totally untrue. I wrote to epupz and pointed this out and no reply came back. when I looked a couple of weeks later the same adverts were still being displayed. So my experience has coloured my view of epupz.

hi polly,
i was originally on a list for a puppy off a breeder i got of the kennal club site. i googled daschunds and 1 of them was epupz so i had a look! that was wen i come across meg,her picture was on there she was 6yo getting rehomed because her owners were emigrating and i just fell in love with her:).there was 2 other dacs also from this same person up for rehoming all adult. i only paid £100 for her with papers kc registerd and all health certificates! i didnt know about cd then if i had i probably never would of looked on there! but im glad i did otherwise i wouldnt have meg.maybe i was just lucky :) .coz i know now that breeders are not vetted so its basically up to you to vet them, but surly not every1 is bad who advertizes on there! i did concidor getting the pup aswell but i was advised to wait till ide had meg 12mths,but a few weeks later aparently the bitch i was getting a pup off had a phantom anyway so no pups! :(

It seems you were very lucky with your epupz purchase. It is good to hear the lady selling the dogs had cared so well for them and had available the current health certificates for you. It is nice to know you have a lovely dog as well as your dog getting a good home with you.

I found my puppy through the Kennel Club. If you go onto their site and sign in (easy and free) then you can search the country for puppys of whatever breed you are after. They have got all the contact details of the breeder. litter size, date of birth etc.
HTH :-)

Definitely contact Breed Clubs.  All the sites mentioned, including the Kennel Club, will list anyone who's pups are registered and will pay the money to be listed!  Just being on the Kennel Club list is not a recommendation.

The Kennel Club website is ok, but normally by the time the list is posted it's out of date, but worth ringing anyway as breeders may have contacts of other breeders with pups.

Good luck

Even if you find puppies advertised somewhere contact the bred club to find out if they know of the breeder.  That way you will know if they are a known reputable breeder, known rogue, or perhaps unknown pet owner.

You will know what is expected of reputable breeders of that breed in relation to which Health screening tests the parents and or pups should have, what age pups normally leave their Mum, at what age Mum should have first litter and how many (normally fewer litters than the KC maximum of 6).

When I got my second dog I asked in the vets, and the receptionist gave me a list of breeders known to her.She also gave me advice as to what to look for and expect.Even though the ones she gave me did not have pups they were very helpful and introduced me to people who were planning them.

I have not bred a litter of pups for a few years, but from time to time I do advertise on sites, in the hope that anyone considering buying a puppy will contact me, so that I can advise them to go to our breed clubs, to get advice and hopefully to find a responsible breeder.

I think if you find a breeder you trust, or get good advice from the breed club, you are more likely to find the right dog for you AND for your family. Even if you buy through the KC lists I would advise you talk over with the club litter register secretary, and/or the trusted breeder, as to the suitability of the litter you are going to buy a pup from. The reason I say this, is because I have seen too many working bred dogs, go to pet homes where the new owners do not know what they are taking on and the dog subsequently ends up in rescue.

For example my friend Rory will get his working springers from rescue kennels, as he knows these dogs need to be doing something, so he patiently trains them and then works them. The previous owner will hand them into rescue, because they are noisy/destructive or both. It is because they are bored. What is not understood is that in a lot of cases, these dogs need more than the basic obedience training.

Another friend Doreen has just taken on a rescue working bred springer, her second, who was being rehomed because he was destructive. In her hands as with Rory, the patient retraining has paid off and they both have lovely dogs. Rory works his Doreen doesn't but she understands their need to be mentally active.

As with any breeder you have sole responsibilty of checking them out for yourself. Ask lots of questions. You know what you see, if in dout get out. The Kennel club give lots of advice on what to look for.
