Hi,
I have recently brought a female bandog pup (Dad is Presa cross Cane corso mum is neopolitan mastif) My question relates to where to keep her when i bring her home, I was thinking of keeping her outside during the daytime when i am at home and then bringing her in doors at night and when i go out, I have a shed in the garden in witch i am thinking of putting her outside bed and toys etc, I dont want to lock her in the shed will she be ok with the door open so she can go in and out? and of course if it is bad weather i'll keep her in the house, Can you please give me your thoughts on this,

Thanks,

Regards

ROB.

This may be a silly question, but if she's going to be outside when you're in, and inside when you're out, what's the point in having a dog?

Also, dogs left unattended outside are very often stolen. :(

The mind boggles :(

Isn't this the same puppy you were asking about having ears cropped Rob ? Did you listen to the advice given ? ( just because i'm a nosey old bag :D )
Again socailising springs to mind ..... not to mention what other people have said about if she's out when you're in .........

Why ?

Hi Stanley,
Yep it's the same pup, And yes after reading the post i decided not to have her ears cropped!! The reason i wanted her in when i'm out is that her second role (After being a pet) is to provide a security presence at my house, She would be no good if someone broke and she was in the garden, But i thought by putting her in the garden whilest i'm at home would give her a change, Of course i will be taking her on loads of walks etc, And will be socialising her with other people and dogs, I hope this post makes sense, If you think i'm not doing th right thing please tell me!!! I am open to change and the whole reason i'm on this board is to ask questions and get advice, Although some people seem to think i'm stupid i'm not i just want to get everything i can right for my new pup and asking questions on this board seemed like the best way of doing so,

Thanks for all your help

Hi Rob
Not everything is black & white is it ? ;-)
I'm so glad you've decided not to have her ears cropped :D
fair point Rob, all 3 of mine are pets first & foremost its just an added bonus that mine make loads of noise if someone is about, hopefully this would put a burgler off if not they'd be a bit daft ! lol :)
How long would she be left for ?
Having a dog live in or out is a very personal choice, like the one we make as to whether or not we allow our dogs on sofa's or on our beds.
I know that at work we dont re-home any of our dogs if they are going to live out, however some gundog people i know their dogs only ever live out.
We all start somewhere Rob & good for you for asking & learning :D

Hi Stanley,
When i say she would be left outside i cant really give an amount of time i just meant that whilest i am at home she could be out in the garden, My theory is that because she will be such a big dog she might prefer to be in the garden at times? I'm thinking of giving her 2 or 3 good walks a day is that enough?

Thanks

ps. I admit i liked the look of the cropped ears but i didnt know that could be so crule but now i know the facts i would NEVER get it done so thanks for putting me right on that issue,

ROB

Hi Rob,
Firstly, I'm very pleased you've had a rethink about the ear cropping ;)  Secondly, fair play to you for looking for as much information as possible - it's a bit daunting at times, particularly if someone feels the need to ask a lot of different questions, but I'm sure nobody on here ever intends to make someone feel stupid!

>She would be no good if someone broke and she was in the garden, But i thought by putting her in the garden whilest i'm at home would give her a change<

Re your above comment what immediately springs to mind is that if she's outside while you're at home and vice versa, then vital socialising, house training, and even just the most basic manners will not be learned :( All that aside, (and it's all very important, particularly with such a large dog) neither of you will get much companionship from the other and dogs are very much companion animals :)   Only last week I learned of a 14 year old dog being shot by an air rifle when left unattended in it's own garden.  The resultant injury ended up with the dog being pts.  Dogs are often reported as being stolen when left unattended, even when in locked kennels/runs.  If your dog were to attack anyone when loose on your property (say a postman, delivery man) you could well be prosecuted and your dog pts.  So, I guess what I'm trying to do is point out that as I see it, there are an awful lot of negatives in planning to raise your dog this way and I can't honestly think of any positives off the top of my head.  But perhaps someone else will.  Good luck, keep asking, keep open to learning.  Regards Teri :)

Rob have you owned dogs before????

Dogs are a social pack animal.  Adaptation to living with us has enabled some of their inate instincts to be dulled somehwat and this lets them cope generallyn with some time on their own, but basically being seperated from their pack (you) is very unnatural and stressful.

When you are at home that is where the dog will want and should to be.  Bearing in mind the kind of breeds in your dogs makeup this humand bonding and socialisation is doubly important as such a strong powerful anumal will need to have an impeccable well balanced temperamant which it cannot develop in isolation from you.

My dogs have access to the garden all day, and where do they choose to be, lying around the room I happen to be in, and this is an independant hunting breed.  They view the garden as somewhere to go and pee.  Four of them do sleep outside in a kennel by the kitchen, simply as this is convenient, but night time only when we all go to bed.
