Hi all
Anyone who has read some of my other posts will know that we are the proud owners of a Newfie puppy - 12 weeks old today. We've begun preparations for her first proper trip into the outside world which will be in about 10 days or so. I've just bought her a seat belt harness and had to get the large!! Lady in the shop tried to assure me that medium would fit and last her a few months before needing upgraded...at the rate she's growing it wouldn't have lasted a fortnight!!:-) Plan to invest in a bigger car soon so hopefully its just a temporary measure anyway.
Anyway, we've been working on her training and she's doing very well. The only problem I've encountered so far is with going out the front door. Until now, anytime we've needed to take her out the front door, she's been carried to avoid contact with unvaccinated dog and any other potential dangers. Now, however, she seems afraid to approach the front door. She's happy playing in the hall but if the door through to the front porch is open she sits down and point blank refuses to go into the porch. I've tried tempting her with treats and toys and leaving the door to the porch open so she can explore it at her own pace but I cannot get her to go in there. I've even tried opening the front door so she can see all the way through from the hall to the front garden (whilst holding her on the lead) but she is very frightened. this is the only thing I've seen her be fearful of yet as she's quite a confident little thing. Anyone have any suggestions how I might help her to overcome this fear? While I can continue to carry her outside as necessary for the next while, I don't fancy my chances at carrying a fully grown Newf over the threshold at walkie times every day. LOL!!
