getting LOADS of these lately, at least three a day. Just saw a news report on the telephone preference service, so opted out online, took about 2 mins! very pleased, thought it would be a right palaver. Just put Direct Marketing association in to google and link is on their site. Hope it works!
Thought i would post the direct link for you http://www.dma.org.uk/content/Prf-Introduction.asp (sorry, dont know how to make it hyperlinked)
there are several services for fax, email, mail and telephone - we are signed up to all of them! :D

Thanks Kkirgirl, does it work?
Yes its brilliant... it takes around 6 weeks to get on the system and for a few months after you may still receive unwanted mail, calls etc but by law - any company wishing to mailshot you or cold call you without your prior permission must check this list otherwise they can be fined.
Any company who has just got your info won't know you have opted out but give it a few months and you should notice less and less.
I've been on it for about 4 years and I don't get any sales calls and hardly any junk mail.
I recently signed my grandmother up for everything as she kept receiving sales calls during the day *sigh*
:)
I also signed up for no junk mail in the post can't remember the address but do a web search. The nuisance call one takes approx 28 days to come into force, but you will still get the odd few that slip through the net. There are two sights that you sign up on one of them you need to renew every year.

I signed up with the telephone preference agency, it took a month to come into effect, worked for about two months and now im back to getting at least 3 calls in an evening and usually a couple of answer phone messages from machines telling me ive won something :(
:( you should report the companies (don't know who to mind) if your listed on the preference service then they shouldn't be calling you
My mum and dad signed up over the internet too but they are still getting nuisance phone calls, the phone ringing and then no-one answering etc. 3 months down the line. It's really getting them quite upset now as it's been happening for nearly a year. They keep getting these companies that say they've won loads of money etc. too but as my parents never enter anything they know that this is a load of rubbish.
How can they stop it?
Kkirgirl.... you can ring BT and complain IF you have the number the call is coming from. i got plagued by fax phone calls, BT were very pleased i wrote all the numbers down, a different one every time
oh just to add , im on all the preference lists but it still doesnt stop the "you have won a ....... pls call ?????/ to claim " calls. i have caller id now and those calls dont display a number, so i dont answer them now :D
edited to add.. a genuine caller will leave a message, but having said that so does the recorded "you've won " calls aswell sometimes :-(
We had a spate of such calls (no-one answering) and just didn't answer the phone for ages, unless we were sure who it was...after 2 weeks the calls stopped. Very annoying.

You need to sign up to Anonymous Call Reject Call service by BT. It is £15 a quarter and you get NO MORE unwanted calls. If anyone calls you with a "witheld number" they get a message to say that their call will not be received.
This means that you never have any of these calls ever again. Bliss.
Alternatively you could leave all your calls on Answerphone and pick up only when you recognise the voice.

Or get caller display and only answer the calls whose numbers you recognise.

I joined TPS but was still getting calls ...so I rang BT and changed my number ..2 hours later I was freee :D

Unfortunately this does not mean you will remain so.
Most of the cold calling firms now dial via computer so your number will eventually come up...............

Well 2 years later it hasn't ...maybe because I went ex directory at the same time ;)

That would probably be it then, merely changing your telephone number would just delay them tracking you down remorselessly.
However, even ex directory numbers are not totally immune however...........
And it does not stop banks etc calling you.

It stops banks calling me. The only bank that calls is my own bank ..and as I gave them the number that doesn't surprise me ;)

<Anonymous Call Reject Call>Thats free on our phone company lines
