Does any one have any experience of contract whelping/puppy rearing?

I have a nice bitch from whom I want to breed in future, and is full sister to 2005 crufts BoB stock, and whom i haven't shown due to a puppyhood injury.  I want to take a litter from her with a view to getting a couple of nice show quality puppies to show, and to eventually carry on the line.  However, I have little desire to rear a litter myself as whilst I take my dogs/pups to work and out and about with no trouble, I cannot commit to being at home for 8 weeks!

The owner of the stud dog is happy (and very capable) of rearing the litter for me - I would take my bitch back to him at about 50 - 55 days, have my choice of the pups, and leave him to sell the remainder through his own contacts.

Does anyone have any experience of this sort of arrangement, or could suggest what I need to have in a contract, and reasonably importantly what sort of fee I could expect to pay?

With thanks in anticipation

I know of one or two people who have done this with flatcoats, but have never had the cheek to ask them what the financial arrangement was - not that I have the slightest intention of doing it myelf, but just nosey!!!

Would be very interested in the replies (again - just being nosey!)

Have to say that if your Bitch is with you even at work then she may be very stressed if she is taken somewhere else to whelp, my own bitch would have been distraught at being separated from me.  Not sure how good that would be for her or the pups.

This would be called a loan of bitch agreement and for the purposes of whelping and breeding the litter the person woudl own the bitch and be listed as the breeder.  What arraangements you come to between you about who gets what etc is up to you to draw up and sign.

I ahve bred a litter like this for someone who could not through ill health whelp their bitch.  There were no problems with the arrangements.  Originally they were going to ahve a pup, but after the mating they found they couldn't so I paid them the price of a puppy/stud fee for the use of the bitch.

Saying that I would never do it again.  The bitch was unwell when she came to me with terrible dirhoea which by whelping left her ill prepared and we ened up with a C sectiopn and an underweight bitch.  She could have died and things could have gone terribley wrong, and this could with the best will in the world have caused problems for me, as there woudl have always bveen a niggling doubt in the owners mind about my care for their bitch.

If you do this get everythign in wrtinting not just the loan of bitch agreement.

hi, so if the bitch went to welp at the stud owners home, who would pay for the c-section if 1 was needed? as the bitch would be under the stud owners care .who would pay the bill? im assuming the bitches owner would!

No on a loan of bitch the person whelping and then rearing the pups would pay for everything, but they get to sell all the pups.  Of course there may only be one and they ahve to give it to the bitch owner in a similar way to if the bitch owner had to still pay a stud fee or give the pup if that was the stud fee.  Again all comes down to what is agreed.

You can do it through the KC also they have a loan bitch form to fill in.
