I am hoping someone can please enlighten me as to how to go about researching a dog's pedigree. I have searched this forum and other sites including the breed club for gsd's and haven't come up with anything. Just wondering is there a way to do it if you have a particular dog's 5 generation pedigree and some kc reg numbers (and names of some dogs). I have recently purchased 2 gsd puppies (I know now a bad idea but am hoping with the proper training I can make it work). The breeder besides telling me how good an idea it was to have the 2 puppies together as they would be company for each other also told me they were kc registered. Have since found out they are not on the breed register but these breeders had supplied me with a typed out 5 generation pedigree. I can see where the link in the registration was broken on the dam's side as the dam's parents have no numbers next to them. When the breeders finally spoke to me they said that the breeder of their breeding bitch had refused to register his litter because of some falling out with the kc and he didn't want to pay the fee. I'm not sure I believe this story now but wondered is their anyway to trace the breeder of her bitch or is tracing pedigrees all word of mouth from breeders. The KC were no help when i spoke to them. Just also curious besides the problem with my puppies not being breed registered how do people who are interested in a breed go about researching pedigrees? Any advice or help greatly appreciated. Do the names Readepter or Duncastle mean anything to anyone. Wonder if Duncastle is the name of a place?? (Hope I don't sound too stupid, which i probably do). I am in the UK.

I'm sorry I can't help you - maybe just type the names in on Google & see if anything comes up?
That's about all you can do, I'm afraid. Just enjoy youar pups as wonderful pets, which I'm sure they will be - although, speaking from experience, you will have your work cut out with two!!
We kept 2 from the same litter which we ourselves bred (couldn't bear to let these two go :D ) - and oh boy, it has been hard work!

thanks lokis mum. I have been searching the internet for days typing in different things lol. I don't seem to be getting anywhere!! Have you got gsd's too. The trainer we go to advises us not to interfere in the play biting growling etc as they are sorting out the pack leader hierarchy which makes sense. There have been no problems so far and they are both really good but they are only nearly 14 weeks old yet. We have been training them seperately and bringing them on walks seperately. Any other advice about them?

No, we has Aussies (Australian shepherds)
Did my post sound like I was trying to breed the dogs in the future?? I have just joined this forum and from reading lots of other replies it sounded like a great place to talk about dogs and get advice............ I have no intention of breeding from them and they will be getting castrated at the first opportunity which will be my next question ........... do I ask that in the health section??
p.s I am really enjoying the two puppies can't stop looking at them.

Hi Aishling, are these your first GSD's? They are a wonderful breed. I have 2, I must admit they are hard work and require a lot of attention and mental stimulation. But the rewards you reap make it all worth it. Are both pups from the same litter? I take it they are both male?
I haven't heard of Readepter or Duncastle in the German lines. My two descend from VA Uran Vom Wildsteiger. Both were rescue dogs but I managed to get my hands on the pedigree. My bitch had a registered sire but he wasn't known for anything. In fact the breeder had a reputation for being a bit unscrupulous. You don't know if they are German Lines? Try this website, www.gsdonline.com and click pedigree database. You might be able to trace the lines 4th/5th generation back.
If not, let me know who the fourth generation are for both sire and dam of pups, I might be able to help you. You don't mind me asking who the breeder is? If you want, send me a message, I'll see if I can help you. :-)
duncastle is the kennel club name of my dog i got her in ayrshire she is a solid black duncastle id the name in which the breeder registers all the pups under i am also sure readeptor if the father of my dog

Hi there. My big lad has Readepter as 3rd and 4th generations. Would love to get to know more, as he is bi-coloured, mum was all black and dad bi-coloured. But from searching his pedigree, it shows a lot of white shepherds and even blue/tan shepherd. Any ideas?? Thanks
anita, please email the names and i will see what i can find out for u, my email is bimbo24@hotmail.co.uk
My mum breeds gsd's with peter read his kennel affix is (readepter) and i'm good friends with his son if you would still like any more information i'm sure i can get their contact details for you.

Yes how i agree with all your comments on the GSD.We are on our second one now,our other one had to be pts last year aged 11,and she was the love of my life.this one we have now we got her at 4months old,we are her 2nd owners, and I think we may have forgotten what a handful they are when young,we have had her a year now and she is shaping up and we love her.Anyone got any tips on how to stop her barking at other doge when we are out walking. She doesnt want to fight or anything like that, but you know what its like when you have a GSD,in other peoples eyes they will always be the villan. So any tips appreciated,to stop this anti social behaviour.

I have 2 lots of littermates, it is very hardwork and time consuming but I do enjoy having 2, they are so funny together. I always socialise mine separately, they never walk together, or go to class together or into any envrionment outside of my house together. As I have other adults to walk it is easy for me to split their walks as I am doing several walks anyway. However, every time I visit a train station, garden centre, school, etc I have to do the job twice thus making it a bit more of a chore. I have never found a problem with my littermates bonding with me but I do work my dogs so the bond is slightly more intense anyway. Also, I am the novelty in my house being one of only 2 humans versus 6 dogs so this can tend to help. If you only have the 2 dogs they can be more bonded with each other, especially if outnumbered by humans!
dachmad, you need to get into a good socialising group, either a sensible class where they have CONTROLLED off lead play or a good group at the park. GSD's tend to bark around that age and if you tell them off or give any negativity you could be reinforcing their worry. I always reward mine for offering me attention, with or without distractions and they soon learn to "check in" with me when they spot something they are unsure of. I find that the barking is ususally gone by about 8 months old if your dog has a gentically sound temperament. Which area are you?
Moonmaiden thanks for the reply .We went to training when we first got her,She was fine ,but I found because the training was in a village hall,we never seemed to progress.I dont know of any outdoor training in my area..Herts/Beds.Also I think my other half is a lot of the problem .because where we walk its viewable from the house, and if there are other dogs over there he will wait until they have gone what do you think? I assume that she is pretty stable very good with children ,good with the in house Daxi.I would say she might be a bit nervy, she is not as laid back as my last GSD.But we dont know what went on in her former home. Also when we went to pick her up the lady just happened to say she had a white mum and a black and tan Dad,correct me if I am wrong but can the white gene can make them a bit scatty.I have mislaid my paperwork for her at the moment so cant give you any bloodline information.
this post should have been for Zajac sorry moonmaiden.
