Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / mislead by "breeders" Any advice?

I am saddened annoyed with myself and most dissappointed with what these so called breeders have done to me. I went to buy a puppy and definately wanted a kc reg puppy which it said in the ad it was but also mentioned trials and agility which i thought meant the puppy might be good at this in the future. When i got there they said mum and dad were both kc reg.  I bought the puppy papers were not ready at the time they said. Eventually I got papers through from kennel club but it said trials and agility where german shepherd should be in breed and dam has no kc number. I have spoken to the kennel club and yes there are apparantly two different registers one for breed and if dont qualify for that because one of parents is not fully kc reg they can go down on this trails and agility register which to me justy seems like a total con.  BUYERS BEWARE. I really don't think there is anything I can do now I have spoken to these breeders again and they say it was a misunderstanding and "Oh you weren't thinking of doing anything silly like going to crufts were you?".  Well it would have been nice to have the chance.  Considering the breeder kept going on about how good looking my puppy was and he would make a good stud dog some day and he would advise not to get him castrated.  I feel I was very misled.  Please don't get me wrong as this puppy is and always will be a much loved family pet but the other thing is I couls have got a puppy not kc reg for half the price I paid.  Has anyone ever come across this before or is there anything I can do to stop these breeders doing this kind of thing?  The Kennel Club were no help whatsoever and i am wondering if the other owners of the rest of the litter even realise they haven't got fully registered pups.  Would appreciate any replies! (I feel so stupid).

I would be interested to know if the Activities registered pups registraions look like the breed registered ones.

Honestly I don't think the breeders were out to decive you as they are obviously into working their dogs and their advertisment mentioning these things would sem to show that they would assume that anyohne replying to the advert knew about the two types of registraion.

Many people who wortk their dog do also breed from them with the view of producing pups excellign at these canine sports, and very respected are somne of these breeders and people interested in an Obedience prospect would sooner havew such a well researched pedigree, even if of two different breeds than a breed registered ones whose parents have no proven working ability.

Wee the parents Hip Scored and Eye testred?  if they were and they were no more than a pedigree pup then that sounds fine.  Teh unregistered dogs you can buy for half the price are bred with not thought as to what went into the breeding and no health tests.

They should have mentioned that they were registered on the activities reg. though. When I see 'KC Registered' I would also assume it meant breed, as any dog even crossbreed's can be registered on the Activities reg. so it would be pretty pointless mentioning it..
Also, being registered on the Activ register is nothing to do with anything really especially nothing with the pups, it only means that the dog is able to compete in trials... not even that, a dog can be registered on the activitites register just for the sake of it and not even seen a trial let alone compete!

Just out of interest guest, what affix is your dog?

There was a very nice border collie pup I was thinking of getting a few months a go, except I thought I'd leave it as I was looking for a bitch really not a dog. The add specifically said they were pedigree but will NOT be KC registered so were going for 250 pounds.

A few weeks later I saw an add on agilitynet, the same dog which was now KC registered and going FROM 400 pounds. It was the same dog because I mailed the breeder...

The breeder also breeds german shepards...

Dont feel stupid this happens a lot, we all skim instead of proof reading and asking the breeder when we get there, when i bought my first bullmastiff she was advertised as kc reg and even when i phoned up he said she was kc reg, then when we got there she was dog lovers and i felt so sorry for her i bought her, i do think a lot of breeders play on people because half the time once you see the pups you wont one and you end up leaving with a pup, even though you wonted to show them and you end up with a dog with more health problems then a hypocondriac like i did a couple of years ago.

Warm regards Susan.

Unfortunately it does happen a lot and there's nothing that you can do as the KC are not interested!!  It's a shame when people are paying pedigree prices and more for dogs that are not KC registered.  These are just people who prey on the GP to not really know the details and think that certain papers DLRC included are the normal KC papers.

Well thanks for all your replies.  Unfortunately these were not breeders who were interested in working or obedience lines just getting more money from people who don't know there are two kc registers.  I was told by them that the dam was registered when she isn't which is the reason the puppies are now not on the breed register.  Also no health checks had been done but I was told they never had any problems with any puppies before so I believed that aswell.  I know I should have walked away but when you see those cute puppies...........  Anyway they have another litter on the way so they are not bothered.  I had my friend phone up to check them out and if you ask the meaning of the trials and agility bit in the ad then surprise surprise the price goes down by a hundred pounds per pup.  The ad also mentioned Pedigree German Show Line which doesn't sound like working dogs! It just seems so frustrating that nothing can be done about these kinds of people who only seem interested in making money.  There was no affix to the kennel but they were near Wisbech.

Ana yes I saw that advert too! She has pups and older dogs for sale all the time though.

And I agree, if it was registered on the activities register it should hav been advertised as that, I did wonder the other day though how long it would be before a breeder advertised a pup as "KC Reg" meaning activities register - because the pup actually is registered with the KC! Quite a clever way of misleading the buyer!
