My 4yo Aussie mix had a stroke about 4 weeks ago (Fibrocartilaginous Embolism) leaving her rear legs and tail paralyzed.  After a lot of work and patience (on both our parts) she has improved to about 95% in one leg and about 60% in the other (and can wag her tail again!).  I thought the progress was great and was very encouraged until yesterday when I took her in for a recheck and was told they now suspect Myasthenia Gravis due to weakness in the 60% leg.  Huge disappointment!  When walking it will give out after about 30 steps which the vet says is a sign of muscle weakness that shouldn't be there.  I thought it was just weak from the stroke but continue to see improvement.

So, I have found some information about both of these disorders but I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are related in any way, is it possible that the stroke caused or sped up the progression of the the MG?  Prior to the stroke we had a "dietary indiscretion" (she got into the garbage) and I've wondered if that brought the whole thing on?  (All three vets I've talked to say no, but it all seems so coincidental) Does anyone have any experience with either of these problems?  I'd love to hear some stories...information is a little hard to come by. I'd appreciate any insight or experiences!  Thank you!

Not in dogs but know of it in humans.  A friend of mine was diagnosed with MG a number of years ago and with strong steroids lived a good and normal life.  The MG in him had affected the muscles in the throat and he wasn't able to take anything tablets etc came up through his nose. It was awful to see.

Hopefully, although I don't know, the use of strong steroids will helpin your dog although of course it wil have to be well controlled and have regular check-ups.

Hope all goes OK.  It must be so distressing especially in a dog so young.

Thanks for replying.  The vet did tell me that humans have it, and much of what I've read even in dogs it usually shows itself in the throat just like your friend.  I think it is manageable too, I am hoping so!  We will go back early next week to see what our next steps are.

Thanks!
