Speaking to a man yesterday out with his dog who said that his dog had been mated with one of bitches on 3 consecutive days and then with  his other bitch for 2 consecutive days. total 5 days. Then goes on to tell me that on the last 2 days his dog was used on someone elses bitch in the afternoon after mating with his bitch in the morning. so he has had 7 matings in 5 days with different bitches. My point to him was that i thought mating 2 different bitches on the same day within a few hours was a waste of time as he had not had enough time to produce sperm for the 2nd bitch, if you understand what I mean.Any way with that he said " your a fool woman you don't know what your talking about" and walked off.So you guys do you think I am right or is he right. I am not disputing that the dog isn't capable of mating in such a short period of time, I was trying to tell him that it is unlikely that he would produce sperm in such a short period of time.

Well the real answer is you are both right.  Teh dogs sperm prodcution cannot keep pace with that much usage, as some os produced daily but some is there stored.  I wouldn't want to be the owner of the two last bitches as the amount of spem available may have been reduced to the stage where conception might be affected.

When they collect semen for storage they will take from a dog on 3 consectuive days and then like the dog rested to take any more.

I remember looking into this when I was trying to mate my difficuolt bitch with a maiden dog who kept missing and ejaculating onto the ground, to ascertyain if there was any sense trying again on the same day and how much sperm production would be affected and couldn't find anything concrete.

Here are some google search results [Link]http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=effect+on+canine+sperm+quality+after+repeated+ejaculation&btnG=Google+Search&meta=[/Link]

Yes brainless I agree with you, and I feel that 24 hours would be more ideal rather than 6 to 8 hours between matings especially with different bitches.

While I agree on the futility of the exercise ;) I have to say that must be one happy, tired dog LOL :D :D :D :D

I thought dogs made the sperm seven months before it use.

Warm regards Susan.

The stud dog I used on my first mating had to do two matings on one day due to very bad timing on the part of the girls and we both desperately wanted to use him.  I had 13 puppies she had 9 so it can be done.

Was the dog who had the 9 pups mated second? i was thinking your dog had the first mating so had more pups and the other one got what was left ;)

I wouldn't want my bitch to be mated by a dog who had been with someone else in the morning.  What about the health risks for cross-infection?  Not nice.

I always thought the dog had no bearing on numbers of puppies? Isn't it the bitch who releases the eggs?!??!

No, it's the bitch who determines litter-size. If the slightly smaller litter was down to lack of sperm, they'd have been lucky to get a single pup.
