Topic Dog Boards / Health / wormers for collies?
- By Oldilocks [in] Date 10.06.05 16:02 UTC
I seem to remember reading somewhere that a certain worming tablet should never be given to Rough Collies.  We have been prescribed Milbemax by the Vet (we bought it at Reception) and now I am concerned that it is not the 'safe' one for Collies as I haven't used it before.  Can any 'Collie' people help please?

Hi, I have australian shepherds, and my vet would not prescribe milbemax for mine, as there is something in there, that is along the same lines of Ivermectin, which can be dangerous to collie type breeds........
We just use a standard wormer called Canovel now and have had no problems....

Hope that helps,
Gabrielle x

intervictmin is the dodgy one,so if gabrielle says milbemax is similar id take it back & question them about it. its not worth the risk when there are safe ones

Thanks Gabrielle and Michelled for your replies.  I have just rung the Vet to be on the safe side and I have been told that Milbemax is definitely safe for Collies.  It does not contain Ivermectin which, apparently, is the one which can be a bit suspect.  However, I won't give it to our little girl until this evening.........just in case someone else comes along here and disagrees with my Vet!!!.............:)

Nothing on there really, they are just advertising sites!  Thanks anyway!

Milbemax is of the same family of drugs as Ivermectin and as such I wouldn't give it to my collies(Rough or BC's) although it is supposed to be safe if you strictly give the correct amount for the dogs weight with no estimating either weight or dosage. HTH

Thanks Satincollie............I was hoping that you also would reply to my post.  You have just made my mind up for me!!  With respect to all vets, I trust 'Word of Mouth' more than 'Science'.  I will give her a different wormer.  Thanks again.

Hi taken from their website

Special Precautions and Warnings

Studies with milbemycin oxime indicate that the margin of safety in certain dogs of Collie or related breeds is less than in other breeds. In these dogs, the recommended dose should be strictly observed.

The tolerance of MILBEMAX in young puppies from these breeds has not been investigated.

During treatment with MILBEMAX, no other macrocyclic lactones should be administered.
