Topic Dog Boards / Health / Scissors??

Can anyone here reccommend what type of scissors would be best for trimming the hair round my dogs eyes, the vet suggested I do it to keep the long hair out of his eyes. I'm a bit worried about poking him in the eye!!

Any help would be appreciated

I do this with one of  my Briards, I just cut the bit around the inner corner of the eye towards the nose at an angle and then leave the fringe to flop over the rest of the face so that it parts in the middle but the rest doesn't stick in his eyes. Hope I'm making sense so far..........

I use hairdressing scissors, but then in another life I used to be a hairdresser and have never been able to use blunt ended scissors. I had to use blunt ones once on Monsterman (he goes through about 6 pairs a year as I also do his feet) and it was more hassle than it was worth.

How thick is your dogs hair? Is he having a problem seeing where he is going? How long is the hair? I would only do it if he really can't see where he is going and it's causing him problems.

And finally......if you really aren't confident doing it yourself, then I would suggest taking him to a groomer and getting them to do it for you or you could always get them to show you a few times so that you feel more confident. :)

Thanks Hairypooch that's the bit I want to do it seems to get matted up everyday with his sleep, so it's ok to do that then?

He is a Shih Tzu puppy and I can't decide if he is too young at 11 weeks to go for a bit of a trim, what with the hot weather I don't want him get hot and bothered?

Very, very sharp hairdressing scissors are best as the sharper the scissor the less likely for the hair to be pulled at all causing the dog to fidget or jerk about.  Unfortunately those sort of scissors do not come with blunt ends so you need to develop a technique of always having the point slightly pointing away from the eye.

I could do with a canine version of the Girls World head to practice on.
