Hi I wondered if anyone could help in September we are getting a Rottie pup we already have a Border Terrier entire male 3 1/2 years old ideally we would like to get a male Rottie but worry if we are asking for problems having two males in the same house.
We have been told by a Rottweiler breeder there will be no problem as our Border will always be top dog unless he decides to vacate this position to the new pup.Our Border is ok when other dogs visit our home but can be dominant towards other dogs when out walking.

would welcome any advice or experience

I can't speak for bt's or rotties, but I've got 3 male collies in this house and the 'baby' is entire. The oldest is 10, the next 3 and the youngest is just 1. The youngest gets beaten up by the 3 yr old on a regular basis but he usually, well ok always, deserves it! :p I think as long as there is a decent age gap to avoid direct competition, which it sounds as though there is, two males should be ok.

HTH :-)

I used to keep Borders & also had a Rottweiler (male Rottweiler & several BT's male & female) Never had a problem (only with 2 of the terrier bitches falling out with each other - but that's another story) I don't think you would have any probs introducing a young Rottweiler into the family.
Personally I'd have a bitch - but I'm sure either would be ok.

Hi Border man.
I have an 11 year old staffie and am getting a rottie bitch in just under 3 weeks. I was advised by my breeder that it may be best going for a bitch as A) I am a first time rottie owner and apparently they are easier to control and B) because of the dominance thing, to males of my breed may want to fight to be top dog.
Speak to a couple of breeders and also the rottie clubs.
Good luck.
Sarah
