Hi,

I have recently started breeding from my cocker spaniel bitch. She has just given birth to her second litter ( first, this time last year ). I have used a reputable stud owner but have been having problems with this person. They have manager to pressurise me into endorsing the pedigrees of all of the puppies. They are also trying to get me to say to my new owners that they cannot show the pups either. I can see the reason why we need the endorsments ( puppy farms, etc ) but I think that the stud owner is being a little bit unfair. I have always wanted to breed and show dogs but this is truly putting me off. Are all people in the dog world like this!?? I would love to start showing but the person seems to be intent on putting me off. This person has had me in tears as they are making it sound as if they are regretting letting me use their stud ( although nothing was said when they were taking my money from me ! ). Many thanks
ps THIS IS A GENUINE QUERY

I feel for you, i to can understand the endorsements but not allowing showing is going abit far, i wonder if it's because they are scared of the compitition, do they show their dog?   Dont get upset they can't force you to do anything you dont wont to, put endorsements on as it will safe guard your puppys but let new owners show them if they wont to.  Dont be intimidated by baffoons. At the end of the day you are in control it is your litter not their's you've payed them for their services, i can't understand why they dont wont you to let would be owners show them unless they have something to hide. Take care, and dont let anyone upset you. Hugs and kisses.

Warm regards Susan

Hi Guest,

I can't think of a reason why a reputable stud dog owner would wish to prevent offspring from his dog being exhibited unless it is a very poor quality litter which he/she thinks will reflect badly on the stud as a producer  which if the case begs the question why he/she agreed to the mating in the first place as reputable stud owners IMO screen bitches for their suitability with their dog and are surely unlikely to get things THAT wrong that the entire litter is completely unworthy of showing at any level .....

Perhaps you could register with the forum and provide more info and that way you are likely to receive more varied suggestions and assistance.  There are several cocker breeders on here as members (I'm not one of them) who may be able to give you breed specific advice on this by private mail.

Regards, Teri :)

I'm a bit puzzled as to how you could prevent the new owners from showing their dog if they wanted to anyway  - let them have fun if they want to show - if the pups are not good enough then they will soon know by the show results - after all how many of us started out with a top show specimen ? -  As the stud dog's owner has already taken your money and the pups are here then she is hardly in a position to dictate terms - endorse for breeding if you want to but to prevent the pups being shown - I think not ;) !.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it would probably have been better to start showing before breeding, that way you would have been able to learn about these (and other) things first.  I cannot understand why the stud owner wants to stop people showing unless as has been said, the pups would be a poor reflection on the parents - in which case, they shouldn't have agreed the mating (and particularly a second mating).  Perhaps you need to put this down to experience and start showing, once you start you will be in the position to learn from others with experience, then you can look at breeding again.

Hi! There's nothing underhand about endorsing the registrations to prevent breeding (you as the breeder can always get the KC to lift that endorsement when the pup proves to be good enough for breeding from, and if the new owners want to!) but there's no way you could prevent the new owners from exhibiting them. (Many years ago there was an endorsement against exhibiting which could be added as well, but that was scrapped ages ago.)

So I'd endorse the registrations and get the purchasers to sign in writing that these have been explained to them. Then there's no problem. Did the stud owner explain why the pups shouldn't be shown? Are they mismarks or anything like that?
