Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Mum not eating after whelping. HELP.

PLEASE could any one help my bitch whelped 7 pups on the 31st may/1st june and she has not eaten any think she is on a BARF diet. i have offered her though the day but she just sniffs and walks away.
she also keeps going behind the whelping box and barking. she tries to carry her pups every where, and she some times wonders round whining. today she has a dark brown/red discharge coming from her vulva.
she is feeding puppies and cleaning them and they seem very happy and well.
i am just worried about her. should i take her to the vets or is this normal and till they settle and get use to it. (it is her first litter). if you think something is wrong what do you think it could be.
PLEASE HELP!

Hi Guest! Congrats on your litter! As your bitch has only just whelped it would be sensible to call the vet out to check over both her and the pups. For the first 24 hours after whelping I don't offer my bitches any solid food, only plenty of drinks, especially if they've eaten all the afterbirths. Giving birth leaves the mother's insides very tender, and it takes some time for them to settle back in a more normal position, having been squished up for weeks! The dark reddish-brown discharge is also normal, and can continue for several weeks, becoming lighter and less profuse as time goes by.

Is her whelping box in a dark, secure corner? Bitches generally prefer to have their pups in a cosy, den-like place in a quiet area of the house, rather than in a more exposed area. To help her settle you may have to stay beside the whelping box 24/7 for a few days.

But certainly call the vet out for a post-whelping check to make sure all is well. It's far better the vet comes to you than you take her and the pups to the surgery. Good luck.

It's normal for a bitch not to eat  after welping.Mine  didn't eat for 2 days after .Important to feed her in her welping box  as she'll be reluctant to leave her babies.I hand fed my bitch  with  tuna ,tripe, gravy bones and scrambled egg for a week after as that's all she would eat.I even had to hand feed her water. If she's eaten all the placentas she will be fairly full anyway, try tempting her with a nice piece of fish or chicken. If she won't eat from your hand then put a few gravy bones in the bed with the pups she'll eat them up no problem in an effort to keep the bed clean.
Browninsh red discharge is also normal and can last for several weeks.Has she had a post delivery vet check yet?If not you should take her to be checked out...take the puppies along too and get them checked at the same time.
Her running around and barking is just down to her being a little over anxious ,if she's carrying pups around maybe she feels a little unsure being a first time mum.I have my welping box in the corner of my kitchen, with a tent effect over it so she had privacy and she can see me for reassurance.....she knows I'm there if she needs me but she's secluded enough if she wants peace and quiet.
Hope this helps and good luck
