Hi, just after any advise on getting my puppy to stop eating stones! He is a 13 week old Mastiff and he loves eating every stone he can find in the garden! He will actually eat anything he can find on the ground! We have had to cover up all the stone chipping in our garden, but when he is out on short walks he will trey and eat ANYTHING he sees! I have to remove stones, cigarette ends, bits of bark, sticks, rubbish etc!!! I have tried to distract him with small treats, but it only works for a second and then he is back at it again. I would be feeding him snacks all the time if i kept this up!!!
I was hoping that he may just grow out of this, but in the meantime i would be very gratefull if anyone had some advise on how i can get him to stop it. I am a bit worried about the stones because i cant always stop him swallowing them and i dont want them to block up his tummy! :-( He eats them as if they were sweets!!!!
Any advise please?????

Maybe try walking faster? Mastiffs are large dogs with a large pace :) he is probably gettin bored enough to look for stuff to play with. Walk quickly, talk excitably, maybe take a pully toy out and play as you walk?? Knackering....yes!

Why don't you try giving him something to do whilst you are walking, like carrying a toy or a paper/magazine.  That's what I do with henry and he just tends to concentrate on what he is holding rather than looking for things to pick up.  If you really make a big fuss of him whilst he is carrying the item it should take his mind off what's on the floor.

My Staff used to do the same when he was a pup, I found that he grew out of it just make sure that you catch him be fore he starts trying to crunch them up!

Our old springer used to this, and I found distraction was the only thing to keep her off the stones.  And we still had to go through the operations for blockages when she managed to swallow some: it's not a pleasant experience!

Sorry just realised how old your pup is.  I am sure he will grow out of it just be quick to react if he does pick something up.

My Beardies have both eaten stones out of the garden I just shout "drop it" and they spit it out but you do need  a watchful eye !!!
they do grow out of it though then moved onto big sticks :)
