although i have not made a claim yet as i have only just taken out insurance with E&L after reading so many bad reports about them here am seriously considering changing insurance company's.The only problem is am i under contract to them for a certain period of time or can i cancel when ever i want
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 01.06.05 12:42 UTC
I aj also with E&L insurance as far as I know you can cancel it at anytime...I would check your cover note..
- By spaniel-lover [gb] Date 01.06.05 13:10 UTC
The only way for you to know for certain is to read your terms & conditions that would have accompanied your documents.

I use E & L, I have done since they were DBI.  I can't comment on how good or bad they are at paying since I have never had to make a claim, but I'd like to think that they'd be efficient and process things smoothly if I did.

That doesn't seem to be the case, according to reports from people who've used them, unfortunately, Stacey. "Blood out of a stone" is a phrase that springs to mind ...

Yes I had the same experience with them. I cancelled with immediate effect with E&L.  I now use Direct Line and they are fab!

My vet once said E & L stands for excuses and lies !!!
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 01.06.05 15:36 UTC
just got a quote from pet plan for a breeder & show insurance and nearly fainted at the price, even the girl on the end of the phone asked if i was sitting down, it was 10 times more expensive than E&L, anyone else have a breeders & show insurance which is reasonable
- By ClaireyS Date 01.06.05 16:17 UTC
my parents are with E&L and they paid out straight away when their dog was attacked - and it only costs them £60 a year
- By archer [gb] Date 01.06.05 16:23 UTC
Many vets won't deal with E&L.I use Marks and spencer....excellent value for excellent cover

M&S seems too expensive £16.35 for each animal a month, with 6 dogs and a cat it would be a lot each month to pay

<I use E & L, I have done since they were DBI>

E&L were never DBI(Dog Breeders Insurance) were taker over by Pet Plan if memory serves me right(PP is owned by Allianz Cornhill Insurance)

E&L are involved with Dog Breeders Association who they sponsor

I have made a claim with E&L, and yes, it did take three months to pay the £250 claim.  So be prepared to have some cash in the bank to pay your vets bill.  Good luck.

Can highly recommend M&S.  Have just changed to them and found them very helpful over the phone and cheaper than the previous company.  Costing me £18.65 for two dogs, one crossbreed and one classed as pedigree.  You get 5% discount for multiple pets which they take off the largest premium.
- By Rozzer [gb] Date 02.06.05 19:41 UTC
E&L are bloody useless!  Luvapug it depends how you pay your premiums as to how long you are commited to them for - If you payed your premium in one go you can cancel and they would have to refund the difference.  If you pay monthly you have to wait until renewal time.  At least I'm pretty sure that's how it works ;)  Also be careful of some 'big' names that are in fact underwritten by E&L if you read the small print - thats the mistake I made

PS I now have a credit card for veterinary use only :D  All insurers are sharks if you ask me......

...Now I'm off to sort my holiday insurance :D :D

Right everyone I still haven't insured my dogs and I haven't got a clue.  Just went to M&S website and most of us on here aren't able to insure our dogs because we breed from them!!!  Couldn't believe that Shar Pei's are a breed that they won't insure!

What is going on in this world.  Are people trying to stop dogs from being bred.  I have been looking for a suitable insurer now for 10 months, I was going to use M&S but seing as I'm not allowed to because the main dog was brought into this country to be used at stud what can I do?  I'm tearing my hair out running around in circles.  I need to insure this dog but haven't got a clue how to???

I personally use More Than. I like the underwriter who is well known and think there offer very good service. You get 2 months free and the cover is the best apart from Pet Plan which was double the cost, the only thing Pet Plan has over More Than is that they reinstate the full vet fees every year  One or two of the others including More Than set the amount and once the pot is used it is used. So for example you have £6500 cover per illness if you use the £6500 in 5 years then you won't be covered.  This £6500 figure has been a thought out and well researched figure. This cover suits me fine. I insure mine just over a year old.

You pay £9.99 per month BUT you get 2 additional months free regardless how many policies you have.   SO it is actually only £8.56 per month. The best I think next to Pet Plan anyway.

I have used E&L despite the claims they are useless, I have had 3 claims for 3 different dogs, one for £2,683, another claim for £1,218 and another for £412 and all claims were paid. Yes they do take longer than Pet plan, but they are cheaper. You do need to abide by ALL the terms and conditions as they are very strict, but I have never had any problems and never had to fight a claim to date. (knock on wood)
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 03.06.05 07:16 UTC
Hmmm, perhaps that's why More Than hikes the insurance when the pet reaches a certain age...
My policy with them was £21.99 a month for a 6 yo Boxer, then when her renewal came up
they wanted to hike it to £41.99 a month!!! I'd only ever claimed £150 max in the years we were
insured with them.

I stopped the policy, as thats what it costs to insure 2 of my other Boxers together!
Sadly for me MoreThan bought out PetHealthcare Services so in time my other insurance
policies will also hike astronomically :(
They blame it on rising vet bills - my vets have not increased their bills by over 100%!
Also they say they now base premiums on your animals breed, age and your postcode....
Which when you were based with PetHealthcare they never did.
- By Blue Date 03.06.05 08:50 UTC
Funny I am the opposite way they brought mine down. My payment was £11.99 for 3 of my dogs and last year they brought them all including our labs down to £9.99
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 03.06.05 18:23 UTC
You are very lucky :)
I live in the RG postcode area and friend lives in I think Surrey
and they hiked hers from £36 ish per month to over £60!

Perhaps we are the unlucky ones!
