Hi, we've had problems toilet training our 4 month flat coat bitch.

She has been on antiotics twice already so the vet took xrays etc today

Turns out she has an elongated and flaccid bladder and the neck is wide rather than tapered in. Half the bladder sits in the pelvis as well.

She's contacting the vet shcool here in Edinb but has no idea yet what to do.

She says at best we will have a few years. She will repeatedly get infections as she cant totally empty her bladder and urine will just sit and eventually infection may spread

We cant get her neutered now but maybe with a season she may get some muscle tone.

Anyone heard of this or can ask someone about it so I can ask my vet?

My pc is knackered so i wont be online much but will check in.

Thank you all, very upset.

So sorry to hear about your flattie :(  Hopefully more knowledgable folk will be along later.
Just a thought, but have you spoken to the breeder, ie, is she the only one in the litter affected?

Fingers crossed for you and your girl.

Thanks guys, had phoned the breeder and she'd kept a pup who's go the exact same symptoms as ours so have told her to go back to the vet as it sounds the same.

We were just wondering if anyone knew of any drug therapies.

Vet says if she's always prone to infection ie some urine always stays in bladder then eventually it will spread and she may have to be put down.

She's been totally honest and has said she needs to try and find others who have dealt with it so I'm asking everyone I know.

Cheers

A similar problem is seen in humans too, sorry don't remember what its called but should turn up in a web search re. urinary incontinenece problems.  Perhaps there's information that will help your dog.

Sorry, can't help a lot - just give sympathy.

My youngsters have occasional accidents up to the age of about 4 months, then it all seems to sort itself out, but this sounds different.

All I can hope for you is that maturity will sort things out.

Sounds as if you are going to have to ensure that she doesn't get urinary infections - I would suggest adding a cranberry extract to her food (cranberry somehow "mops up" bladder infections) - and keep some cantharsis 30c (homeophatic remedy) to give her immediately you suspect that she might have an infection.

Hopefully, she might grow out of it.

I was told by a doctor that barley water is good to help prevent urinary problems. Get some pearl barley and boil it up in plenty of water,  strain off the liquid and add it to the drinking water.

MMM

From what I've read Cranberry stops bacteria 'sticking' to the mucous membrane and muliplying, so it can't get a hold and is flushed away.  I've used it with success :D

I had a client at my dog training who had a boxer whose bladder was in the pelvic area. He also had problems with house training.

He was referred to Dick Vet School in Edinburgh who were going to operate when the dog was fully grown. I lost touch with him before then.

I successfully used cranberry capsules for my bitches urine infection.

A friend of mine has a Spinone bitch who had this problem. The vet also advised seeing how things where after her first season and thankfully her bladder seemed to strengthen and now she's fine. so hopefully your's will go the same way. Hope so :) She was advised also by the same vet. Not to have her spayed as this can also cause incontinence sometimes

Hi Julie, just reading your post, unfortunatly I have never seen a case like your puppy, the poor girl :( I think a referral to the vet school would be a good idea, and hopefully they will find a solution to her problem,
please let us know how you and your girl get on from here,
Carol :)

Thanks guys for all your replies.

The vet has sent scans and xrays to dick college. Theyve said to test to see if any bacteiria in the bladder wall.  Still yet to hear bout scan.

Can you get cranberry capsules from chemist or pet shop? ie r they for humans or dogs?

cheers guys
