I WOULD LIKE A BEAGLE AS A PET - NOT TO SHOW- PERHAPS FOR MY DAUGHTERS TO TAKE PART IN DOG TRIALS - NOT SURE- ARE BEAGLES GOOD PET DOGS? ARE PET DOGS AS EXPENSIVE TO BUY?  I LIVE IN HERTFORDSHIRE BEDS/CAMS BOARDER ARE THERE ANY BREEDERS IN THIS AREA.

MANY THANKS

my beagle is great with children and he is lovely. Check out the kennel club for reputable breeders. I would also advice you check out their breed traits as digging is a big one. It's best to make sure you are aware of all these as you dont want to find them out and not like them before you get your baby home. Join up to this forum as you cant reply to this post, and being thick today and lazy lol, i dont know your exact location to give you further advise or possible contacts.

I agree with Stann they are brilliant with kids but you also have to be aware of the fact that once they get a scent of something they go.  Mine got lost for 3 hours.  Regarding the cost.  Pet dogs cost as much to raise as show dogs so you should expect to pay around £1000 and as they are hard to get hold of I would expect you might have to travel.  As with everything in life you get what you pay for so although you might get a 'bargain' one long term it might cost you more with health problems etc. Try one of the 9 beagle clubs who will put you in touch with reputable breeders.

i totally agree you get what you pay for. We payed a£400 for our first baby, to be honest we were naive and a bit hasty and the poor little chap was dead within a week. We ended up paying £500 in vets bill that week as he was in intensive care in the animal hospital. He was sold to me as a pet only and was not registered. You would do well contacting the breed clubs as generally they are reputable. Good luck.
