Thanks Polly & Briedog for your comments.  What I ddin't explain in my email was that the operation was carried out by a specialist orthopeadic vet and not our own local vet - this makes it all the more worrying - but we are definitely getting another opinion and are just waiting for the ex-rays to be returned!
