i have 9 day old pups due to be wormed at 2 weeks so i,m told after reading earlier pot BAD REACTION TO WORMS  i,m wondering which wormer to use

I used Drontal Puppy Suspension without any problems. :)

I always use Panacur 10% suspension.  Only had one bad reaction when worming at 2 5 and 8 weeks.  Having gone back to previous vet advised protocol of doing them at 3 weeks and then 7 have had no more problems.  I had wormed all the mothers during pregnancy from 6th week to 3 days post whelping so pups would have had very light worm burden and I suspect that worming them too often with nothing for the wormer to work on caused problems.

If you use just the old fashioned Piperazine you will need to worm more often as it doesn't kill larval stages only mature worms, whereas Panacur and one or two of the others kills immature life stages.

Also always weigh each pup and dose accordingly.  With panacur it is 1/2ml per kg of bodyweight.  I always round down. so a pup of 1 1/2 kg would only get 1/2ml and wouldn't get 1ml until it topped 2kg and so on.

Personally I think 2 weeks is far too young to worm puppies. Any encysyted larvae dont hatch for 21 days after birth and so to do them at 19/20 days is fine, but I always wait until 21 days.  I did  worm two  litters ( 2 and 2 1/2 week old litters) with panacur suspension when it was first availalble for younger pups and they were so poorly I never used that again and will not worm before 21 days now. The first time I did 2 week ones they were all ill and at the vets looking very poorly, so the vet agreed perhaps next time to use it a few days later, which I did, and the same thing happens. They were VERY expensive wormings after trips to the vet and treatment for 9 puppies. :-(

I now use Strongid paste.  You only have to give it once per worming, not 3 times, its easy to administer gentle and effective) at 21 days, and again 2 weeks later and then Panacur granules ( which I have never had problems with) or Drontal puppy at 8 weeks an onwards. I think its good to use different trusted wormers.
Pups HATE the taste of Panacur suspension and by the time you approach them with the pipette for the third day running they are very determined to keep their mouths clamped shut and are very distressed when you force it down them.

Sorry if I am being repetitive and have no desire to offend anyone, I just feel so strongly about it.
