Do i have cause to worry please, if anyone could help me I will be truly grateful. My daughter who is 28 would now like to make a pause in her career, and become a mother, which means being at home 24/7.She is an animal lover, and as a child has all sorts of animals including two cats which I have adopted from her ,as her partner has an allergy. They have now decided that when she stops working in September this year, they would like to become dog owners. After intensive research the only breed which comes into question with them is the English mastiff. I am also doing my research, and I must say this breed of dog sounds fantastic,I know that they need plenty of love and attention, which they will surely get.He or she will be going to training school, and will be looked after correctly. My only question is what are its down sides please, do I have reason to worry about my new granchild, or are they really as loveable as they are portrayed to be? I will be very grateful for any information.

I would suggest that if hubbie has an allergy to cat fur that he may be allergic to dogs too, and that daughter will have her hands full with baby.......

Hi, i have recently got a Mastiff puppy. He is 12 weeks old and is wonderfull!!! We have a 5 1/2 year old son, so we did LOADS of reasearch before deciding on a breed too.  So far our new puppy has been great, he gets on very well with our son (they are sitting together on a beanbag as i type!!) :-) I havent found any bad points so far and they are a lovely, gentle breed!  He sleeps most of the day and loves cuddles!!! He rarely barks and is soooooo sweet! I dont think your daughter will regret getting one! If i can be of any more help please get in touch. :-) Good luck!

Down sides....slobber up your walls, big feed bills and you MUST be extra careful when rearing a large breed such as a mastiff since it is very easy to cause damage to growing bones by incorrect feeding and/or incorrect exercise.
I would suggest you contact the breed club and speak to some 'experts'.....one mans meat is another mans poison and they will give you all the negatives aswell as the positives

And tell your daughter to definitely find a breeder that at least hip scores, and both parents, they are good dogs with children, but then again when someone calls at your house and your Mastiff runs like a lunatic to greet them at sixteen stone thats a lot of dog to ram into a toddler,I have Mastiffs, and have heard a lot of horror stories of broken bones etc,not through aggression just through size, weight etc,and of course the slobber, you not only need a mop for your floors but one for the ceilings not a bad plan either,LOL,
Wendy
