This has happened to one of my dogs, it has moved from between his shoulders to his breast bone but I have a feeling it has moved again. I may asked for it to be taken out and have another one put in because nobody will think to scan him on his leg which is where it now appears to be.
I dont know why it keeps moving though, does anyone know?

How old are both dogs?
I asked about this when mine were chipped and was told by the vet there is little chance as they are *barbed* nowadays

think I will check theirs are in place next time I'm there

My dog is just over 2, his chip had moved when we took him for his yearly check up.The vet is not worried but we are because of the position of it, we dont feel it will be found where it is.

Was it inserted into his scruff or between his shoulders?
Hera is just about to turn two the chip was in place when she had her hips scored 10 months ago ,her chip was between her shoulder blades.

Hi
Our 2 year old was chipped at Crufts last year just after his first birthday, friend who is a dog warden lent us the scanner to check everyones, the oldest dogs has been in for about 8 years, but we couldn't find his. Took him to the vets who also scanned him and couldn't find it.
Petlog paid for him to have full body x-rays to find it but it turned out that it hadn't been properly inplanted. They vet put a new chip in at his shoulders whilst he was under anaesthetic, which supposedly was one of the new barbed one that doesn't move.
Six months later we were in the vets for something else and asked if they could just check it for us, they took a while to find it - it's now between his front legs slightly to one side of his sternum!
Both Kayla and Chloe's chips have moved from where they were originally implanted, Chloe was chipped about 4, maybe 5, years ago and Kayla was done at 7 weeks, so nearly 3 years ago. Both are now ON their shoulders blades but are easy to feel so in theory should be easy to scan but, touch wood, the need hasn't been there since they got done.
Idõ was only chipped about a week ago as we were still umming and arring about tattoing and as far as I know its stil where it was put in, between his shoulder blades, and from waht people are saying I should expect it NOT to migrate but just as long as its there and can be scanned then I don't mind :D
I have read recently a very good article about micro chips in the Dogs Today magazine May 2005. It is worth a read. Also even if your dog is chipped they still have to wear by law a collar with identification on. So why put your dogs through pain and discomfort. Sorry I am not a lover of putting a foreign body in dogs. Just my opinion.
"Anyone can steal your pet, find him wandering or take a fancy to him at any time - and even though your animal is microchipped and even if he turns up at a vets surgery you may never find out. Even if the vet is decent enough to tell you that he has seen your pet he cannot give you any details of where the dog is or who has him." This is just a bit taken from the article.

Ellis's chip is now somewhere in his chest. Trouble was we didn't realise it had moved until we were bringing him home from France. The French vet couldn't find the chip at all, but thankfully they did find it at the tunnel check in. What a scare that was, we thought we were going to have to leave him there with OH.

I took a stray cat in to be scanned just yesterday. The Vet Tech. scanned his whole front end and towards his back in the chance that a chip had moved. You'd think any veterinary office would know to do this and with dogs too.
Ive just been on the microchipping course myself while i was there we chipped 3 dogs ,,the next day one of my bitches has a small lump on her shoulder im almost sure its the chip and its moved already, i havnt got my own scanner yet so il have to wait and see!! :)

This just confirms my decision re chipping. I have all mine tattood. Nothing to move there! :D
how do find the tatooing and what age is it done at?
I will scan my girl the moment i get the scanner to see if its the chip ,she the last one i chipped under the vets supervision and the chip was inserted correctly between the shoulder blades
I saw mentioned on the thread earlier the chips were barbed we were shown a chip before we started the implanting bit of the course and it was the size of a large grain of rice and perfectly smooth glass.
wether there are different types of chip i dont know.
Ive had several dogs chipped over the years and this would be the second ive known move ,all the others are still perfectly in place. :)

Snap! :D
My first 2 are microchipped and checked regularly by my vet at my request as I am paranoid about them moving. One was done at 5 months and the other at 7 week and they are now 4yrs and 3yrs and they haven't moved. They were done by our local Dogs Trust so I think they have had plenty of practice :-) My pup came with a breeders tatoo and I am considering having him tattooed and put on the register as it seems to be a more visible way of identifying a dog. I have had a lot of interest in him and also a few people thinking he is a completely different breed. He is a red merle Border Collie but even my vet thought it was a wind up when I booked him in for the first time as she had never seen one and didn't know there was such a thing! (it was April 1st :-p ) There have even been a couple of people that have suggested I might have been conned....... Do they only put the tatoo in one ear? I have checked out the website and I know there is someone near to me that does it. I don't know anyone that has their's done :-)

Dogs are always tattood in their right ear.
It takes a few seconds and my dogs have never even squeaked.
