Gabi was spayed 7 weeks ago but yesterday on our walk we could not shake off a determined male terrier type dog. He followed us all the way back home with his nose up Gabi's bum. The attention was not unwelcome at first as I'm sure you know I have problems with Gabi as far as dog to dog agression and I was impressed that Gabi did no have a go at this dog and I thought she had found a pal. Once home I did not take her straight in the house as she seemed to be enjoying the interaction. Then this brave little terrier tried to mount her. This of course looked very comical Gabi being a 16 month old GSD and this little terrier who's head only came up to Gabi's belly. My question is I thought once spayed that this would stop these male attentions, am I wrong?

Wrong. :-) My spayed Cairn is frequently set upon by a neutered male lab! Talk about a completely futile activity.:-)
In most cases neutered or spayed animals still retain some sexual markers recognizable to the opposite sex. However, without coming into a season I would expect the amount of attention to be much, much less.

Following a spay the hormones can be all over the place, and depending at what stage in her cycle she was at when she was spayed, she could even have a phantom pregnancy (which gives off attractive (to dogs!) odours) following it.

My bitch was spayed 3 years ago and she still is a stud magnet! :D
Sadly none of her charms have rubbed off on me....................
So when is the best time to spay? before her first season or let them have 1 first?.

Personally, if I was going to spay, I would do it 3 months after the first season.

I agree and in larger breeds not before a year old, sp possibly after second sespn to allow for some mental maturity to occur as well as physcial.

It must be love. Every time we go to the park now, this little dog spots us and comes over. He seems to ignore all the others. I do worry though as it is so small and Gabi plays rough.
