Hi all, i'm looking for a bit of advice about how I stand if I've bought a puppy which I was told would be registered and now seem to be having great difficulty getting the breeder to send his papers, if in fact there are any. I've contacted the Kennel club and they can't find any record of the breeder registering the litter or in fact the name of the Dam on their records only the sire, which is why I'm starting to wonder if in fact there ever will be papers.
It doesn't affect how I feel about Buddy whether he has papers or not as he is a pet but I am a little bit P*ed that somewhere along the way I have been conned.
I know I'm going to have to contact the breeder again but before I do I'd like to know what I'm talking about!:)

Hi Julie,

From what I understand if the bitch isn't registered then there's no way your puppy can be registered with the KC. If you were toldthe puppy was KC registered and you paid the going rate for a KC registered puppy then you would have a claim in the small claims court, should you decided to take legal action.

Good luck with the breeder, but I doubt you'll get anywhere if the bitch isn't registered.

It seems strange because she has kept 2 of the pups herself to show and you can't show unless they're reg can you?
- By Sarah Date 26.03.02 16:20 UTC
You are correct, they would have to be KC registered to show. Did you sign any sort of agreement/contract?
- By julie white [us] Date 26.03.02 16:27 UTC
we didn't sign a contract but she did give us a reciept which stated that the KC papers would follow, she even explained how there was an endorsement that would not allow us to use Buddy as a stud which was not a problem as we have no intention of breeding.

To be honest, in your case it does sound like she is going to register the litter. Have you contacted her to ask?
- By julie white [us] Date 26.03.02 20:24 UTC
contacted her by e-mail today and got a reply tonight saying she has Just had the papers back so will put them in the post, I'll be grabbing poor Mr postie every morning for the next week! :D I'm still doubtful because of how the KC said the bitch wasn't on their records, lets hope it was a spelling mistake on my part and they didn't bother looking too hard.
I really hope that it turns out OK cos I actually really liked the breeder and we keep in touch by e-mail so it's going to be hard if things go sour.

Julie

I'm glad I'm not the only one this has happened to! We bought Tally in January and have had no sighting on his KC papers - I doubt we ever will. Again Tally is 100% pet but it's the principal of the matter that we have been lied to. Unlike you I don't think I have anything in writing so it's going to be difficult to prove anything. So far I have found out that the mum is kc registered but according to the KC she is not owned by the lady we bought Tally from - sounds good hey! I still need to check the dad and get as much info as possible before calling the breeder.

As some of you may remember, she lied about Tally's birthdate so we don't hold out much hope!

It nearly becomes an obsession though doesn't it, even though it doesn't make your dog any different by not having his papers it's just annoying that you've been conned. I'm really hoping that the papers now arrive in the post and I'll have fussed for nothing:D If they don't we'll still love the fluffy ratbag who is currently trying to help me type!:D

Hi Julie,

I know what you mean - I have issued a claim through the small claims court last year (case is tomorrow)!

It's the principle of being conned - people shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

If you do decide to issue a claim, I'll help out if I can!

Alison
I'd be really interested to hear how you get on as it could be an avenue we go down!:(
Thanks, Rachel

Good luck on your court case, Alison. I'll be rooting for you :D

Rightly or wrongly unregistered puppies are usually about half the price of registered ones, so if there are no papers then you would have a claim for the difference in value. If it is a popular breed get the paper and see what price unregistered pups are on average, and then find out the average for a KC reg pup (breed club might help).

hi,
I hope you all dont mind me asking as Ive just read this conversation with great interest as I too have purchased a dog that apears to be non KC registered, ripped off, conned,,, how did you all get on ?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 11.04.02 06:10 UTC
Can't help with your question Mr Plum, but welcome and of course you can ask any question you wish. Did you buy what you thought was a puppy with KC registration that has now turned out to not be registered or not registered with the KC? Jackie H

Hi Mr Plum. I called my breeder just before Easter and she told me the reason she hadn't processed the paperwork yet is because she is still waiting for her friend, who is the current owner of my pup's mum, to do her paperwork to sign the mum to the breeder I paid money to (hope that wasn't too confusing!). She said she'd call back within the next few days with a progress report but I have heard nothing - time for another phone call I think!

I naturally assume the best in people so I'm sure she is telling the truth but it's just frustrating that she doesn't seem to be bothered at how long she's taking. Considering we bought Tally in January and she managed to bank our cheques quickly enough!!

One thing that keeps sticking in the back of my mind is one of the first conversations I had with her she said that her reputation is everything to her - it takes years to build up and seconds to fall ... hmm, I know I won't be recomending her to anyone!!:)
Rant over, Rachel

As far as the KC are concerned the breeder (owner?) is the person the bitch was registered with at the time it whelped so in Rachael's case it is the friend, I think, who will have to sign the paperwork!
