I happened to say to someone at training last night that i occasionally add tripe to the dogs dinners and i got told to stop because it could give them tapeworms as it comes from a cows stomache. Has anyone who has fed tripe for sometime eg. over a year, ever had any problems ?

I once heard that lamb tripe is more probable of passing this worm on,as they are more prone to it than cattle. However this could also be a load of complete twaddle ;) I think there's a thread about it,look back through feeding archives, waaaay back, type in 600 days :)
I dare say youre pretty safe feeding beef tripe :)

I thought my first reply was succinct and to the point rather than being pointless..............
However..................
A dog is more at risk from fleas as to get tapeworm it must ingest a flea that contains tapeworm eggs or it consume a small mammal such as a rodent/rabbit that contains the worm.
The likelihood of a dog contracting a tapeworm from a domestically reared bovine/ovine/equine/porcine is remote as farmed animals are routinely wormed.

You had the ideal opportunity to 'educate' Tohme and you chose not to. Your latest reply is much more helpful and actually answers the question with an explantion. Thank you :-)
Thank you for your answers, i thought as much that it wasn't true because they couldn't give me proof . I dont post very often but when i do i value the response that im given,I now know that im safe to carry on feeding tripe, again thank you.

Hi Ella, there is probably more chance from your dog picking up tapeworm in the park sniffing at areas where other [infected] dogs have pooped! However, tripe as with the majority of my other meats are always frozen first or bought frozen and therefore reduce if not eliminate the risk of parasite transfer.
Sarah :)
PS I frequently feed tripe and never noticed tapeworm eggs in her feaces...And I do check it :D
Hi Sarah, I have been feeding tripe for 3 months and im always checking for worms regardless of what they eat, it was a reasurrance post more than anything. My tripe is frozen and defrosted before they eat it, thanks for your reply the more the merrier :)

I would think seen as worming tablets crystels etc are used regularly any worms your dog does pick up arnt going to be in their system for long enough to cause any damage, I was also told mine will pick up worms from raw i just let it go over my head.
