Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / How accurate are premate tests?
- By Guest [gb] Date 10.05.05 21:22 UTC
My bitch had a premate test on saturday, the vet advised mating within 3-5 days, I.e. today - thursday.  I took her today and she wouldn't have anything to do with the dog and he whilst initially interested soon lost interest. How accurate is this test, could we have been too early do you think or even too late?

Thanks

Mick

They are accurate but not sure how the vet can predict & suggest mating in 3/5 days?
I would think to retest 48 hours later would be better.  :)

Do you live close enough to the dog to keep trying?  Have to say that I'm not into all this premate lark, the dog always knows when the right time comes along.  I've mated bitches at 18 days etc. and never had any problems.  I may be young but i'm a very old fashioned girl :d

You need a series of tests.  You should start before she is likely to have ovulated adn test every other day, this will show the hormones rising to the point of ovulation.  One test will tell you that the bitch has or has not ovulated but not when if she has already.

The test is really accurate, however to get a good result from it you would be best to retest 2 days after the last test to actually get the accurate rise again.

For your vet to have said mate in 3-5 days the dog must have been at stage 2 so generally the dog ovulates soon after stage 2.

The new tests for some reason when stage 2 shows up does say  mate in 2-5 days I think this is a new addition to the tests. Is used to say retest in 2 days only.

Often people dismiss the tests but that is generally because they have not been done correctly and enough of them. Often people do 1 or 2 tests  and to save costs don't do anymore and not wait for the ready result but that is just guessing and not the problem of the tests.   :-)  I have had 100% success with them.

People also say go with the stud dog but I do know trained stud dogs that would mate almost anything and young stud dogs get very confused and can try to mate for 10 days around that time.
