Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Gay tail on Border Collie

Hi
Just started showing my border collie pup (now 8 months) and he's doing well.
One problem. Runs round with tail too high.
Realise that he's just a pup and he's a happy little fellow but has anyone got any tips that have worked to get his tail down.
A gentle check and firm voice worked on last dog but not on this one.
Silly thing is at ringcraft he's fine, only when he's out at shows.
I think this will calm down eventually but any little tips anyone has would be welcome.

Yes it must be such a shame to have such a happy dog and lose out in the show ring...........

I would think it is not so much the "happiness" but the fact that he is now getting to the "teenage" stage and feeling a little proud of himself altogether :-)

I agree that he should settle down when he matures a bit.

Hi
I think previous response was a little unfair. I know what you're trying to say.
I have a young border that did exactly the same thing and still does now and again.
I show, do agility and flyball all because the dog and myself enjoy it.
As you go to more shows you'll find that the tail generally comes down anyway as the initial excitement of something new wears off. I've gone to shows and had a mixture of winning and getting binned. The main thing was my dog and I had a great day out.
Just enjoy everything you do with your dog whether it be showing, agility, flyball, or anything else you fancy trying your hand at.

yes im sure it will come down with maturity, although i have heard of people that trained it with a clicker!!! good luck if you decide to do that!!!

I still have the same problem and mine is two and a half now.  But you say you can get it down in training classes so that is a plus, sounds like he is just getting a little over excited at the shows at the moment.

I do find sitting around the ring before I go on a great help, not so easy if you are in MPD, but at least getting him to feel a bit bored and relaxed by the rings may help for future shows.

Michelle, congratulations, I hear you won your third A at the weekend.  Brilliant :D
