(sorry about the title....nothing else sprang to mind :-)
Cooper has been on James Wellbeloved food for a few days, and ever since, his bum has become a lethal weapon. He just won`t farting. It`s non-stop and the smell is horrendous.Especially as he always sits with his bum directly facing me.I had visitors today and it was just SO embarrassing, the house stunk even with the back door open. Not that Cooper cared one iota! Is there ANYTHING (please please let there be)that I can get or use to stop this?
Thanks
Tina

What was Cooper on before? Was he "ok"? Have you simply changed hos food straightover or did you do it over a period of days. If you did a straight change-over it could be that. Pup's tums can be delicate and have dramatic results from sudden changes in food etc.

He was on Pedigree Complete before but he just wouldn`t eat it.Also it was thought that he may have had a food allergy as well,so he has changed onto the J.W. over a period of 4 days. Not sure if that was too soon though. Basically, his bum started the minute he started eating it. The more he eats of it,the worse he is. (He`s sitting by my feet at the moment, and believe me,it`s bad) :-)

Hudson was on James Wellbeloved when we got him. He stunk the house out with his wind. I could put up with that (just about) but he also had very runny poos and we ended up changing him over to first Pedigree Puppy Advance and now to Wafcol puppy.

I think JW is just too rich for some pups

It is a good food but if it dosen't suit him change it. Jackie H

I have noticed that his poo wasn`t as solid as it used to be. Not runny, but not as firm. (I can`t believe I am saying these things). The only hypoallergenic food that my local petshop sells is the J.W.,so it seems as though I am stuck with it. Just wish I could find a food that he actually enjoys eating. He just isn`t interested in eating it unless I hand feed him piece by piece. (And as I haven`t done that tonight,it is still sitting virtually untouched in his bowl).

Surely if he is hungry he will eat. Perhaps it has become a bit of a vicious circle, don't feed him for a day then see if he eats it. Hand feeding doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Missed something somewhere why are you feeding Hypoallergenic I thought you changed because he would not eat the food you were offering. A lot of firms make Rice & lamb, rice & Chicken or rice & fish would they not do? try giving him rice with chicken (home made) for a day or two, don't hand feed put it down for 15 mins. and the pick it up and put it in the fridge till the next meal, then allow it become to room tempreture before offering it again. Once had a pup who would only eat when I had thrown his food out for the birds, so I would throw his food on the lawn, never look back after that. Jackie H

Cooper was treated for mange when he was very small.(Which has all but cleared up now)However he was still scratching himself a bit,so the vet suggested that he may have a food allergy as well. He has only been on the J.W. for 5 days but there has been a big inmprovement already. But every food that he has been on so far just doesn`t seem to appeal to him after his first taste of it. I have to admit, that I do end up leaving it down for him as long as it takes for him to eat at least half of it. He used to be a chubby pup,but not anymore. The vet knows about his lack of appetite for dog food and is keeping an eye on his weight. I did mix some tuna into his food once and he wolfed the whole lot down in seconds. Would it be an idea to carry on doing this? And also, should I give the J.W.longer to see if his *problem* disappears,or just try another food. I have had Wafcol recommended to me.

To get rid of the smell once it has "appeared" strike a match! Don't worry it should not explode however bad the smell is <g>

Does help get rid of it though but can't help the cause.

I would be happy adding a little tuna or pilchards to his food, bear in mind that you are increasing the protien though. I have a bitch who scrached with Pedigree and Burns but is fine on Arden Grange. Try and bear with the JW for another week and see how it goes. JH

I changed to feeding my dogs raw at the beginning of the year and apart from the "veg" days there is no wind and the pooh is, if not exacly pleasant to clear, is at least very easy to collect and much more compact.

I can recommend Arden Grange foods, very highly. Because the quality is so good, they actually need to eat quite a lot less of it than some other foods, so there is less poo too and its "firm". Its the one I use when I have picky puppies. I put a very little puppy chum with it to get their nose in, and a very little milk on the leftovers to try and encourage them to finish, then the bowl is removed til next feed time. However if they pick at that, then thats it, I wont change them onto anything else. If they wont eat it then I am fairly sure they are using emotional blackmail on me: "Look mum, I dont like it, gimme something else or I shall fade away and die of starvation and it will be YOUR fault!!" :-) YOU decide which food to feed and stick to it, its unlikely it needs a "special diet" and certainly doesn't need hand feeding. Like throwing the food out for the birds, sometimes they will eat it off the floor when they wont eat out of a bowl!! Dont worry and dont pander to it or you will end up with a dog that is impossible to feed! They really know how to play on your worries. Restore - a supplement from Stock Nutrition is good for improving appetite and if you use that with Arden Grange, I dont think you will go far wrong. AG isn't cheap, but as you feed less and it is delivered free to your door within 3 days, it has its advantages. Good luck.
