Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Does the temperature stay low?

Hi
I understand that when a bitches temperature drops this is a good sign that whelping will occur within 24-36hrs. Does anyone know if the temperature stays low? My bitch was mated 53 days ago, her normal temperature is around 37.8 c.(100f)  last night her temperature was 37.2 c (99f) this morning it was 36.9 c (98.5f) but now it has gone up to 37.4 c.(99f/100f) Does this mean I can expect something to happen soon or does her temperature have to stay low?

The theory is that following a drop in temperature whelping will follow about 24 hours later.  The temperature does tend to rise again nearing whelping time which is why it is useful to test every 12 hours in the last few days so as not to miss the dip and also to pinpoint slightly more accurately when that 24 hours window starts.  Doesn't seem to apply to every dog though :)

in the last week of pregancy a bitches tempreture is normally lower than normal around 100F,and you find her tempreture can drop as low as 97F, normally when they go as low as this labour usually starts within 24hrs,you  will find her tempreture will rise again nearing labour. but we found with one of girls last litter her tempreture was all over the place in the last week one minute as low as 96,then back up to say 98,then back down and so on,so really taking her temp was a little unreliable ,but usually we alwys take our girls temp and as you say within 24hrs  we have had a litter of new puppies!,my only concern for your bitch being mated only 53 days ago is she is quite early to be going into to labour .
have you  had the pregnancy confirm? if so i would take her along to your vet just to get her checked out.

Hi
Yes she had a scan on day 35 and a pregnancy was confirmed the vet said there are defiantly 6 puppies may be 8 or 9. Her temperature has been 37.8c (100f) from day one of mating and hasn't changed more than 0.1c. Until now.
Are there any other signs I should look out for besides discharge and making a nest?

Day 53 is a little too early for whelping or survival, book of the bitch states it is safe from day 57 onwards,  my girl whelped last week, exactly day 63 from her first mating, other than temperature drop and a very gentle pant, she didn't do anything else, took me by surprise at how calm she was, I really didn't expect anything to happen for a good while.  Just goes to show that each bitch is different.

Congratulations. How many did she have? You say her temperature dropped, how long for? Did it go back up before the puppies were born?

The temperature drops in the last week of pregnancy can vary from bitch to bitch.  Just looking through my whelping diary & my bitch that had her pups last year, in the last week her temperature was up & down like a yo-yo but then it dropped right down to 36.3 & on checking again 12 hours later was still the same.  I've not anything recorded after that as she had her pups!  However with my last litter, my bitches temperature never really faltered very much at all & then only dropped to 36.5 a couple of hours before she whelped.

My bitches temp was up and down like a yo yo when she was in her last week, we had a drop then it went back up, but i found she has a very large drop and it stayed low, she delivered puppies 26hrs later.

Hope alls well

9 out of 10 bitches will start refusing food shortly before labour starts. I always use this as my first  guideline that 1st stage of labour is imminent. Not every single bitch does this, but the majority do.

If allowed to they will often spend the day before sleeping stretched out on their side. They refuse a meal  and almost always go into labour during the next 24 hours.

My 2 1/2 yr old is at day 63 of her pregnancy. On day 62 her temp dropped and today when i tested it it rised back up and has stayed at that temp. Shes been nesting but not much, Her teats have swoll up, shes been panting mad and just wants sleep. Ik tht their water breaks but my toy breed  is still not house trained within the night so idk if it will look any different.

Might be a good idea to start a new thread so people see your question

I understood that although the temperature fluctuates, it's usually when it drops and stays down that labour can be espected to start within say 24 - 48 hours.  To be honest however, I never set much score by temperature taking in terms of pregnancy and whelping and for sure, never took it once labour had begun - so I have no idea whether or not it goes back up then.

Would be best to be with her day and night now so that you know what is happening with her.
