Topic Dog Boards / Health / How soon recovery?
- By Denise [gb] Date 25.03.02 15:36 UTC
I have a GSD that I will be arranging to have neutered, however, not having owned a bitch for a 'good number of years', how soon do they make a full recovery?

Reason: Would she be fit enough to enter an Obedience Competition ONE WEEK later?

Also, can she then go on LONG WALKS - one week later?

Grateful for any help,
Denise.

IMO no, she will still have stiches and the wounds will not be healed. Bitches do recover very quickly but her tissue will take as long as it takes (about 14 days) to heal together but longer to regain it's strength and I think exercise should be increased slowly being back to normal in 4 to 6 weeks. My vet has told me to allow the same recovery period for Holly as with a cesaerean section in a woman as it's a similar operation. Complete rest for 7 days and then restricted and very limited excercise for another 4-5 wks.

Is this right or is he being over-cautious??

I'm not having Holly done but the info was offered at the first consultation.

Hi

No he's not being over-cautious at all. I had two C-Sections myself and was told no lifting etc for 6 months!!! Don't forget although the surface wound may look healed and the dog seem pretty active - excessive pulling and jumping and running can put stress on the scar tissue and internal wounds.

Speying is MAJOR surgery and should not be underestimated. Although I must tell you, lol, I had my kitten done when she was 6 months old. The vet said when we picked her up "she'll be drowsy and a bit of a delicate tum - so soup, rice pudding, scrambled eggs and in a quite room for a couple of days, then introduce her to the outside again etc etc " Got her home - prepared said food, put the other cats out of the way and guess what - she shot out of the box, wolfed down the normal cat food shot outside and didn't come backk for about three hours no matter what we did. She was fine - no prob's at all. :D

I do think agility etc is a bit different though.

Hello Jackie and Issysmum, thanks for responding. I thought I was being somewhat 'optimistic'! So we will stay home, and take things nice and easy, no Shows or long walks, until Vet confirms all is well with my girl!

At least I now know what 'not to plan and arrange'! Thanks to you both.

Denise.
