A friend of mine has a 3 year old Boxer and started to lose fur on his back (no itching). Then on monday after playing with my dog. He had a couple of hours rest then he went for a walk to the shop with his owner and the dog colapsed for a good 10 seconds. My friends got him to the vets the next day, the vet give him an ecg and told them his heart rate is 23 then 123, The vet also said he had hypothiroid glands. The tablets he has been given are Vasotop 5ml a day and then go back to the vets again in a month, have an ecg and see what has happend. Has anyone been through this before, or knows anything we would be greatful.

It sounds as though the dog could possibly have hypothyroidism,
which one of the classic symptoms can be hairloss.
Hypothyroidism can also affect the heart causing irregular heart rythmns.
I am surprised that the vet has not run blood tests to determine if the dog does
have thyroid malfunction.
I'd actually go back and ask the vet to run blood tests to see if the dog has thyroid trouble.
As the dog really needs medication ASAP if it is thyroid that is malfunctioning.
Common thyroid medication here in UK is Soloxine. I've not heard of Vasotop.
It's usual after beginning medication that the vet will ask for the dog to come back in a month to
re-run tests to see if the medication is working and levels are normalising.
Normally if the dog has thyroid trouble once it's on medication and the condition is stabilised then
heart function will commonly return to normal over time.
Also important to note that some Boxers can suffer with Cardiomyopathy which is a heart disease
that also affects the heart muscle and rythmns.

Vasotop is Ramipril an ACE inhibitor :)

My freind had two bitches who had Hypothyroid and were on soloxine tablets most of their lives which were 13 and 13 1/3, longer than average for the breed.

Their symptoms were patchy hair loss and laziness and weight gain.  The vet at first tried to put it down to the fact they were spayed bitches, but she persisted and on their blood being thoroughly tested (have to be sent off to a specialist lab) then it was confimed and the change in them after medication was correctly balanced (several changes of dose and blood tests), was amazing.  they went out for two hour walks every day until they were 12 years old, were energetic full of vitality with gleaming coats :D

Of course it has to be remembered that Boxers are prone to heart disease so I hope the vet has ruled this out?

The tablets prescribed are for CHF Brainless so they certainly haven't ruled it out ;)
