Hello everyone!
I have a wonderful (but very tiring!) litter of 5 week old pups. They were wormed with Panacur for 3 consecutive days Sat, Sun and Mon of this week. I have noticed that over the course of the past few days that a couple of the pups have loose motions. They are not toileting or straining more often than normal...but the motions they do have are semi-formed i.e have a shape but not firm enough to pick up (sorry to be graphic!). I gave them all some natural yogurt for the past 2 meals to try and settle their tummies but this evening they were still soft. The pups are all active, playful, bright and eating well apart from this.
My question is - how long after the final day of worming can you expect loose stools for? I don't want to assume it is the wormer for too long before I seek advice from the vet. Many thanks for your help in advance!

I won't use Panacur on my litters for this exact reason, they always ended up with upset tummies.  I now use Drontal puppy, which is given once, every 2 weeks, never had an upset tummy with this.

Of course it might not agree with every dog/breed, but it's been lots better for my litters.

Thanks Sandra, its always a quandry knowing what to do for the best. I have used Panacur on my adult dogs for many years without incident. This is my first litter and so first I have used on puppies....and no doubt the last!

Hi

I used Panacur on my litter of 10 for the first 2 wormings and it was terrible the loose bowels seemed to scurge the puppies they couldn't keep anything in (what a mess), the next worming I used the Drontal puppy without any problems at all so I for one will never use the Panacur again.

Val,
Can you tell me how many days after the 3 day course did the loose stools last for? I gave them their last dose 2 days ago now and still seeing loose stools :(

They were loose for about 4 days it was awful, they did much better with the drontal much kinder to the systems I think

I never use panacur, always use Drontal liquid on my puppies. It has a shelf life of 12 weeks once opened, very good stuff.I recommend it to anyone I know who has puppies.Fingers crossed for you that your pups get over their `upset` quickly which I`m sure they will.Gail :) :) :)

hi colliecrew,  I have just used panacur on my recent litter (now 2 left - 9 wks old).  I used panacur paste at 2 and 5 wks, and then tablets at7 wks.  They were extremely runny and also appeared to go very lethargic.  My last litter I used Drontal which seemed much gentler.  I have to worm my remaining two pups again this weekend and although I have the panacur left, I think I may go for Drontal.  I have to say though, that they quickly got back to their boisterous selves.  Stayed runny for about 24 hours after the third dose.  I also discovered one very large roundworm in one poo so I was relieved that it worked.

Thanks everyone for your replies!
The pups never really became lethargic...just slightly softer poops than I would want for easy lifting! Actually, I was horrified that I DID see worms in their poo. I thought Panacur dissolved worms and wondered why on earth I could see the loathsome things! I e-mailed Panacur with my concerns and they replied very promptly that Panacur starves the worms and to see them in their poo indicated good results! Well...you learn something every day!
I have noticed that the stools will start off nice and firm and then looser motions will follow thereafter. When I think about this (could anyone ever imagine how much thinking time goes into the size, smell and texture of your litters poo!) it may be that it is a case of over-eating rather than the wormer. It is the more gorging pups of the litter that this is happening to. Perhaps I should move away from the weaning bowl to individual bowls for each pup. Also, I have always made a very sloppy mixture of food. Perhaps too much water? I shall firm up the texture of the food seeing as they are lapping well from water bowls now. Aside from this, they are zooming around at an increasing rate of knots..playing well and extremely lively. My husband thinks I over-analyse everything...who? ME? LOL

I like many other people have had a litter of pups very poorly after their worming with panacur suspension. I thought I was going to loose them, they wer very depressed and shivery with very runny tums. I use Strongid paste dog wormer for 3 week pups. I like the Strongid becasue its very gentle and you only need to do it once - not 3 days running. the I use  Drontal for the second and subsequent wormings.

My Magic cure for runny tums without apparent depression/poorlieness is a well cooked microwaved scrambled egg with no fat added, which replaces a meal.
