hello there.... does anyone know of a really tasty treat / recipe which I can use whilst in the show ring, one which is good to keep in your pocket?? so far I've been using dried biscuit but he lost interest in it during the show last weekend and it was difficult to get his attention! x :)

Frankfurters (hot dog sausages) are usually very popular! Or slices of ordinary cooked sausage, bits of chicken, bits of boiled, cooled liver ... You'll need a bumbag or plastic bag too with these, of course!

I buy cheapy Tesco value sausages, cook them and then wash them so they are not greasy :) (You can line your pocket with a plastci bag as well ...the noise of the plastic bag will often get the dogs attention ;)
I do liver cake and it's great, not greasy and not too crumbly.

Liver tablets? yummy they are. Made by Barker and Barker, available online in most biggish pet suppliers.
Dawn.
my husband uses pepperami sticks!
Hi Nicola! Here is a recipe for liver cake that the puppies loved when I made it.
Put 8oz of liver in a blender and blend till it is nearly a liquid.
Add 4oz of wholemeal flour, 2 eggs and mix all together.
Cook at 180c for 40 mins until it is the texture that you want it. If you want it harder just leave it in for longer.
Try adding some grated carrot for texture and some garlic as doggies love it.
Hope chudleigh like his treat! :D If not Dougal said he will eat it! ;) :D

Does anyone know of a good conversion site?
I often read recipe's where ounces are used or farenheit in cooking temps. i still go by grams and celcius :)

Recipe books often have these conversion charts in the first page or two.
I sometimes make liver cake but really find the easiest for training and in the ring are liver treats. I buy mine from http://www.puddlepetcare.co.uk/.

I find frolic good for treats at shows, they dont make a greasy mess of your pocket and break up easily if you only want really small treats

LIVER CAKE recomended by all my dogs here they all go potty over it

definitely loads of garlic. pity it smells so foul when you're mixing it all up, but the dogs do love it. And I also microwave it for about 15 mins.
sarah

i have a story to share my sister saw it sitting on the side cooling and thought it was chocolate cake so took a slice and bit into it to realise it was liver cake and she hates liver!!! she wasnt happy lol

I would've loved to have seen your sister's face lol!! I make the liver cake as usual then put it in a largeish glass bowl and microwave it for about 15 mins, or until it's cooked, oh, and turn it over half way through cooking. I find that it's drier than it would be if you cook it in a conventional cooker, but still as effective.
Oh yes, OH has just let me know that I have just washed my trousers this morning but they still had liver cake in the pockets!!! yuck. And guess which greedy beags are busy licking the washer at the moment!

:) :) i've just made the liver cake and he loves it!! :) :) ... only problem, I'm now not so sure how to store it? :( do I keep it in the fridge or an airtight container??? and how long does it keep for??? thanks you xxx

You can bag it into required amounts and freeze it. :)
I bought dried liver and my girl loves it. It is not sticky, you can break off pieces - it does however have quite a strong smell!!!!!!!!!!!
I bag it and freeze it. But I also keep a small amount in the fridge in an air tight container for about three days. I would only give it to chudleigh for doing showing stuff as him will get excited about showing cause it means he has liver cake!!! :D (And we all know how food mad wheatens are! :D). But if you want to give him some as a treat, and as you are free standing him, get him to do that before you give it to him. Gradually extend the time you make him wait for it. :) Glad he liked it :D

I use Iceland own ready cooked sausages and microwave them when required the dogs love them and you dont have the mess of cooking.
I tried the liver cake but unfortunately it upset my girls tums but they enjoyed it at the time...

I buy dried liver snaps and lamb snaps @£1 from Wilkinsons, they snap easily into tiny pieces and dogs love them :D :D
I always microwave liver cake that I have made. Once mixed put in a lasagne type size dish then microwave for 10 mins on high. Goes into an unrisen sponge cage consistency which I chop up while still warm into bite size chunks, put into a sandwich box then in freezer until needed for a show. Only use for shows and always put garlic in! Stinks the house out but dogs love it!!!

Can i just add as some silly woman has pulled me up that i actually own a yorkie and 2 danes!!! and wasnt being derogatory to the toy breed.
Its just a running joke treats on feet. (At my expense if you please being both a toy and giant breed owner)
Some people had a sense of humour bypass.
Took out of context yet again:rolleyes:

That's not exactly what happened as far as I read it. "Silly woman" ;) clearly recognised it was a joke because she was pulling you up for not seeing humour in another thread when you were obviously capable of using it here! Hope that clears it up for you :)
