My mums west highland terrier is coming to stay with us at the weekend she is so full of fun and loves to run rings round my old Cavalier but we live near the beach and although she loves running round the beach she drinks the sea water.  Unless we keep her on the lead i don't know any other ways to stop her.  I love her visits and want her to play off the lead somewhere safe like the beach but last time she cried all the way home then threw up in the bath room has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Sea water can cause gastric torsion in vulnerable deep chested dogs.

If you try teaching her the command to 'leave it' then you can apply this to any situation, sea water, dropped food indoors or out, fox poo :D etc.

If you do a search on the forum you will find plenty of advice about teaching the 'leave' command :)

This will take time and patience but will be more rewarding for all of you than keeping her on a long line which is an alternative but not much fun for you or her.

How about going to the beach when the tide is really out so the water is quite far away and then keeping as high up as possible. That way the dog will have to go quite a long way from you to get near the sea water and unless s/he is desperate to drink it I don't suppose it will bother. :-)
