Ok, please to start with no one shout at me - I know I have screwed up :(

Friday night I got in from the opening of a new bar in town (I left early in order to go home and trim the dog ready for WELKS) and Tarquin my male cat greeted me with a certain pong about him and he looked quite strange.  I had a good look at him and realised he had fallen in the sewage works again :rolleyes: and was covered in what can only be described as human excrement

This is the second time he has done this so I picked him up by the scruff held him over the bath and rinsed him down with the shower, I then diluted some dettol and washed him down with that.  It wasnt until the next day whilst talking to my mum that I realised I should never have used dettol, I was thinking it was Savlon which is safe to bathe in :( 

Tarquin still stinks of disinfectant and isnt very happy, I had rinsed him off well, but could this still poison him ?  should I give him another bath with pet shampoo to remove the awful smell ?

I feel such an idiot :(

I should think if you've rinsed him off thoroughly (and the dettol was diluted) he should be OK.  I do remember as a teenager putting raw dettol on spots (ouch) and having facial dandruff for weeks as well as very sore skin.

I would check his skin out to make sure it isn't inflamed.  If it is then plain water rinses might need to be done.  If Tarquin isn't happy then I should think being covered in sewage and then hosed down in dettol might be a small clue as to why not :D

I suggest that you talk to your vet - as you diluted the dettol, you might be okay - but also, if he's taken a dip in the smelly stuff, maybe he should have an a/b jab!

I do know what you mean about being a batty cat - last year, we had a kitten that was called Battie - aka Batteries Not Included - as he was forever putting himself in dangerous situtions - under car wheels, under the bonnet of the car, in the dogs' feed bowls (at dinner time !), swimming in the toilet..... need I go on?

He is now safely (I hope) ensconsed with an elderly lady in a garden flat - so he can't try flying out of first floor windows (another speciality)

If you use any disinfectant on a cat or where cats are, any disinfectant that goes white in water can be posionious to cats(Jeyes fluid is another with Dettol)Theres a link there for you to look at

I doubt your cat will be harmed as he was well rinsed off but this is as a future heads up for you The way to test anything you have doubts about the test is simple add water to it

Whats an a/b jab ? 

Thanks for the links but I cant access either of them from work so will have a look when I get home.  I think I might give him another bath just to be on the safe side (and to make him hate me even more :( )

This is the second time he has fallen in the sewage and his sister has done it once.  do you think I can complain to the water board?  I know it is fenced off and they shouldnt be in there but they obviously go in after the rats.  I would have thought due to health and safety  there should be some sort of cover on the tanks ? there are warnings everywhere about deep water down there, im surprised one of the cats hasnt drowned :(

Would hibbiscrub be a good thing to bath them in ?

I would bring it to them as a matter of concern as opposed to a complaint as this tact seems to get better results with big companies

Just so you can ask your vet re the right thing to bathe the daft cat in ;)

I think I will give the vet a bell tonight - although its probably me who needs the a/b jab after handling him with that muck all over him :(

How did you get on at WELKS with Alfie? I don't know if I'll be going to SKC as I thought my bitch had come into season last week but the vet thinks she actually has a wee tough of cystitis which may be coinciding with the beginning of her season. If thats the case she is cutting it fine :D She is on Anti-biotics at the moment so I hope she has her season over and done with before SKC, in saying that I don't think she'll do anything anyway as she has become a bit of a plonker when the judge is going over her or checking her mouth, the way she carries on you'd think she'd been to the dentist and had every tooth extracted without any painkiller.  Everyone who goes over her is extremely gentle and I tend to ignore the bad behaviour, when she is being really good then it's lots of treats and praise. We have been advised to try her on some Vit B as I have tried Skullcap and Valerian and Rescue Remedy both of which have had no effects what so ever! I don't even know where this all came from, she has never been badly treated and always attended ringcraft regularly. My older girl on the other hand (the one who hates showing) went to Border Counties Gundog on Monday and showed her socks off to be awarded a loverly second place :D :D  I was so proud of her. She behaved just like a Pro bless her :)

WELKS was a no go, and I WONT be going under that judge again, she basically looked at the dog then looked to see who was on the other end of the lead :( and when the dogs were moving she was checking her nails or looking away and one dog she told to do a triange, watched it move away then turned around to look at the next dog - the steward had to tell her that she hadnt finished, the poor girl handling the dog must have been mortified :(  She did say Alfie was very nice and would do a lot of winning - she then slung us out :p :( 

We had two open shows on Sunday and Monday, he got best puppy in breed on Sunday (he was the only one there :rolleyes:) and got 4th on Monday - out of 4 :D :D  He has been a real sod though lately and has started growling at me and biting me when im trying to stand him, and it is always at the end when the judge is doing the placing

Im not really too sure about SKC either, I know ive already paid the entry but it is going to cost me loads to get there and since my OH has gone its left things a bit tight.  I will see how my finances are nearer the time :)
