has blood in his poo.  Not every time but sometimes.  He is very playful and he hasn't lost his appetite at all.  I called the breeder this morning and he said it sounded like a stomache virus that was no big deal.  He told me if it continued to go to the vet and ask for some antibiotics that would clear it up.  The puppy flew to us on Friday and it could just be an upset tummy but why blood?  It's not in every poo but in the runny (very loose) stools.  He has has his first set of shots at 7 weeks and next Monday he has his second round.  Should I be worried or not?

Thanks,

Leslie in NSW, Australia

I would contact a vet to be on the safe side!

This sounds like exactly what happened to my pup. The change in water upset his tummy and he had little bits of blood in his poo, the breeder said it was proabably a burst blood vessel in his bum. She told me to add a teaspoon of bran into his meals (flaked variety sold in pet stores that looks like sawdust) this bulked his poo out and it hasn't happened since. You only need to add the bran until his stools are solid again. HTH. But if you are at all worried I would contact the vet.:-)Good luck and let us know how he gets on. xxx

Make sure you are not over feeding it pup neither as this can cause bleeding occasionally.

We had the same problems with our puppy who is 6 months old. The vet gave her two lots of injections and two lots of Buscopan tablets before he ordered lab tests on her poo. Turns out she had Campolybacter Jejuni. If he had done the tests sooner it would have saved a lot of trouble. Hope he gets well soon

Thanks!  I called the vet this morning and he suggested worming him again and making his meals for a few weeks.  I started him on mince, rice and mixed veggies today so hopefully we will see a change in him.  The vet will come next week for his shots so hopefully it's over with by then.  Thanks for the advise!

Its almost certainly the result of travelling - either he has picked up a virus as previously said or it can just be stress.  I'd give cooked chicken rather than mince - and give him some pro-biotic powder maybe. If he has already been wormed at least twice before you got him I wouldn't worm him just at the moment, and certainly wouldn't give him any shots untill he is better - it may only aggravate the situation imo. Good luck hope he gets better soon
