We have aquired a 4 year old Flat Coat from the dog rescue,do these dogs have to be trimmed every year?.  Thankyou C.Swann.

It makes sense to trim the long hair which grows between the toes - more comfortable for the dog as he doesn't pick up mud balls, more comfortable for you carpets too!   We thin out the long hair on and behind the ears, basically to avoid picking up burrs etc.

On a pet dog you just use you common sense when the hair becomes unsightly/uncomfortable.   If you aim to show, you need to do it 4 or 5 days before a show.    Many people who do not show prefer the ears untrimmed,but you need to avoid collecting 'noils' of fluff behind the ears.

Is you are unfortunate and have a castrated dog who has grown that long thick doormat coat, he may need a trip to a professional groomer to have a general thinning out for the hot weather, but don't let them clip him right out!!!!
