Unfortunately I am going to have to muzzle our Shar Pei out of the house now. Can anyone recommend a good muzzle, I want the most humane version possible please?
Thanks
Nicky

If you have to muzzle your dog, I would recommend the baskerville muzzle. It's basket shaped, but still allows the dog to pant normally.
Can I ask, if you don't mind. Why are you having to muzzle your dog out of the house?

Hi,
My German Shepherd wears a muzzel (Baskerville) on walks, he has done for a while now and it's just normal to him now. Everytime I pick it up he knows its walkies time :)

I agree with the others on the baskerville - I don't like the ones that don't let the dog open his mouth.

Great thanks I shall get him one. We wouldn't normally think about getting him a muzzle but we had an incident a little while ago. He's having treatment for perforated ear drums and he's pretty grumpy at the moment and although he isn't let off the lead we have a pup as well and although I do not let people stroke him they try to get to the pup and it gets a bit tangled and it worries me that someone might try to stroke my older boy and catch his ears. At the moment he's not to be trusted and I worry so thought it might be better to be safe than sorry.

Copper has a little mikki muzzle but I don't think that would be suitable for your type of dog. Nothing wrong with a dog wearing a muzzle at all - I always say, if in doubt put it on, it doesn't hurt them. If nothing else, it gives out a signal that your dog might not be the best one to rush up and pet, which in some circumstances is just what you want!.

Hi fellow shar-pei owner lol. How is his ear doing now? Shar-pei are funny things, they dont like to be patted on top of head, it has something to do with where there eyes are placed. I tell everyone to let mine greet you, and if she likes you you are ok lol. They have to put up with the slobber too lol. mind you she is so friendly she thinks everyone has to make a fuss lol :) Is it a nother shar-pei puppy you have nic? Hope he gets better soon.

Hi jane
We are making process - we have one ear drum back horrah! He is very depressed with all the treatment and although I trust him around us I don't think I can afford to take the risk with anybody else. We lost our other shar pei in Jan to kidney failure at just 2 yrs old and Bailey was devasted. Unforunately it coincided with the perforated ear drums which makes for one depressed Shar Pei.
Yes we have a 15 week old Chocolate dilute male called Dutch who is adorable and a little monster!
Do you have more than one Shar Pei?
Hi nic. sorry about your other sha-pei, what were the signs of kidney failure? its the most awful thing to happen to any one. I just have blossom at the moment, she is 18 mths old. new puppy just been born, so am waiting for him at the moment :) Then i will have two little monsters lol. Glad bailey is on the mend. I agree with the risk factor around others. How does bailey get on with new puppy? I am a bit nervous on introducing puppy to blossom.
Take care

Hi Jane
God knows what the signs of Kidney failure are. We and the vets did not spot it. Harley was ill over Christmas with what the vets thought was a virus - not eating, wouldn't go out and breathing heavy. He was kept in the vets on a drip and got better - came home and was not himself but was eating and recovering unfortunately 3 days later (3 days after his 2nd birthday) he got the same thing again and we called the vets (it was a Sunday) and took him in as an emergency and he died an hour later. Which they said had been from kidney failure. We were absolutely devasted. He was ill from the minute we got him and we thought all of his problems were behind him, he was an adorable boy and never put a foot wrong - he adored every person and every animal. Bailey also loved him and missed him terribly.
When we god Dutch, Bailey ignored him for about 3 days and told him off by growling at him, after they had established that Bailey is top dog then they were fine together. Bailey didn't once use any force even with Dutch eating from his bowl. Bailey now adores him and they sleep together and play all day. I don't think you'll have any problems getting another pup. What colour is Blossom and the new pup? Are you getting another bitch?
Hi nic
Thats so awful, not noing then getting better and then 3 days later :(
Blossom is red fawn, and puppy will be red and a male one.
Thats lovely that they sleep together lol.
Mine sleeps on our bed with us, naughty or what lol.
Hubby away at moment and you would think she would spread out on the bed, but no still squashed up to me lol.
She goes up to bed at 10pm and doesnt get up till i get up lol.
If you click on my name i did a funny little web site of her.
Take care
Jane :)

it was devestating losing Harley so young. Had a look on your site. Have to say Blossom looks a lot like Bailey! We still take him to classes too - he really loves it although has to be kept away from the other males in the class!
Your not naughty having her upstairs - we always had Bailey and Harley in our bed but when Dutch arrived they had to sleep downstairs as you have never heard snoring like it!
Couple of questions - how do you get on with her ears and also is she good off the lead?
If you look on page 3 of the gallery www.mysharpei.co.uk you will see Bailey, Dutch and Harley
PS - still haven't found a muzzle to fit!
Hi nic
Looked on your site, beautiful looking shar-pei's, should say handsome lol. so sad about harley :( what a lovely colour dutch is. sorry about my site was just a bit of fun, my son helped me lol. no problems with her ears, i do smell them and if she shakes her head a bit too much i have this ear cleaning stuff from www.karistosharpei.com Its really good.
Blossom does look like bailey :) She love her classes, but she barks the first 10 mins as each dog arrives lol
i bought a roger munford muzzel i think it was size 3? they did it in a tan colour so it didnt look so bad,
I have to be honest i dont let her off the lead because i dont think she would come back. but i do take her to a tennis court and let her off there as we are closed in. she loves it , i just sit and wait lol.
I like it when she snores , sends me off to sleep chuckleing at the noise :) I think food is her worse thing to fussy, and she always goes to the biscuit cupboard when any one goes in the kitchen, cons the lot of us lol.
sorry so late with reply, have been ruuning around this evening ,spanish lessons and then my eldest son arrived and i took him home at 1am, now i am not tired. Blossom keeping bed warm for me lol.
Take care
Jane
We can't expects to know everything.... unfortunately. I had a problem with my dog and my vet could not find the cause and though he had a heart problem, but tests ruled that out. I insisted in seeing a specialist, which I was lucky to get an emergency appointment the next day. It turned out to be be cancer and he died the next day whilst at the specialist.
There is a man in the park that has 2 shar-pei's and he said that their life span was not that long (on average about 6 years) is this true? In my opinion they are very ugly, but yet so cute (if that makes sense). He also said that these are the laziest dogs that he has ever owned. It made me laugh.

Hi
Jane - Glad you liked the pictures of the boys - why don't you put Blossom on to? Hmmmm same recall problems eh! We let Dutch off everyday at the moment over the fields and so far he has been 100% even with other dogs to play with - seems to be working when I say to him ok then we are off bye Dutch. He doesn't like the thought of being left but I do actually have to turn my back and walk away and then he comes hurtling towards me! Mind you we did have Bailey and Harley off the lead alot as pups and as soon as they got older and didn't respond we had to put them back on the lead as Harley run the whole way across a field out of the exit and into a road - luckily there weren't any cars but it shook us up badly. I'll have a look for that muzzle. Any news on the pup?
Sarah
Sorry to hear about your dog. Shame they can't tell us how they really feel and then we would know how serious these things are. Generally a Shar Pei life span is around 10yrs old. Although some of course live longer - in fact I have heard off a few living to 13-14 - this is rare though.
I wouldn't consider them lazy - Harley was but he was ill for so much of his life it wasn't a surprise. Bailey loves a 2-3 walk at the weekends with me but will also quite happily curl up all day and sleep. Dutch is amazingly lively and has more energy than Bailey and Harley had put together at the same age!
Take care Nicky
Hi nicky.
I may just do that, when other pup arrives. will have him in 6 weeks time :) cant wait.
Thats what i am worried about with blossom, she would run straight across the road, our big park is surrounded by a road.
I am sticking to tennis courts , i will take a book next time lol.
Just went to see my friends new puppy, she is so cute :) bulldog called molly. they have a 20 mth old bulldog called bailey too. I go over there house and babysit him somtimes, now i have 2 to babysit lol.
I am over there tomorrow night babysitting the 2 bulldogs and 3 kids help. all mine have grown up, thought i had finished with babysitting lol.
Hubby back tomorrow night too, peace over :(
Hi sarah
Blossom is not lazy at all in the day, but she does like her bedtime sleep, we hear her creeping up the stairs from about 9.30 onwards lol and doesnt get up till i do.
I think they are beautiful looking dogs lol, like you say ugly but cute :)
I have heard of one living till about 11 yrs old. But you never no with any animal how long they will live too.
How old are the shar-pei@s the man has? I will be a 2 shar-pei family soon wohoo cant wait :) :)
Take care Jane.
